Only two months until GDPR with FREE ACCESS TO YOUR DATA

It’s only two months today until the 25th May when the new General Data Protection Regulation s come into force. This gives you new rights to request a copy of all your health data free of charge in a format which you request. This means electronic format if you so wish. Further information available at eugdpr.org

Horrified to see my son’s. We have no electronic record before 2015 as 3 previous GP’s did not transfer. Paper notes were transferred and are stored off site after a practice clerk has done a summary for the computer. The timeline is wrong with errors and critical omissions. He is a complex cancer/stroke survivor. I will be using the Right to Rectification under the new rules. I imagine a lot of people will find that there is not much to see online if they have moved like us. Hopefully the new regulation will ensure that better records are kept.

That's terrible, hope your son is ok now?.

If you do go to see your records, I recommend taking a large dose of valium, a hip flask filled with a tipple of your choice, and a packet of ciggies, even if you do not smoke, and a spatula.

This may enable you to read all your records without screaming, pulling your hair out and throwing the file through the window.

The spatula? That is so you can scrape yourself off the ceiling.

Mine would have made the Booker Fiction list!

The problem is with ours is that large chunks of information and diagnoses are missing and they are refusing to correct them. Risk of brain haemorrhage being one!

There are some shockingly subjective comments by the GP and the RECEPTIONIST! This is another reason why open access is essential, the days of staff writing what they want in patient notes is long gone. Everyone should take advantage of GDPR and request a free copy of their notes on 25th May and force correction under the right to rectification that comes within the new regulations. I hope you have recovered from reading yours!

I worked in health care for a long time and we were always told if you don’t want it read out in court don’t write it. Any subjective tosh or disparaging comments written in a legal document (notes) needs to be questioned and action taken to remove. It was never OK.

Does this cover hospital notes too?

It covers everything - though there are special cases. Have a look here:

Thanks Helvella. A further question does this mean that the current "coded access" available online will need to be expanded to show a true record of appointments or will we be given a different access?

I don't know what will happen. Certainly, it is and will be a requirement for the content of your notes not to be obscured from you.
