Just wonder d what others thought? Heard quite a lot about diabetes being split in 5 types caused by liver , pancreas, not able to work correctly. Maybe more etc

Sweden did trial with , I believe , 1500 ppl. It is good , of course for those that may be helped , but where oh where does it leave research for thyroid .

Surely more trials have proved what we all know, how does that work!! ? Getting all that publicity . Sorry , grumbling again 😑😑

I was diagnosed with diabetes before TT had no trouble since with the symptoms of hypoglycaemia which was quite disabling as it happened several times a week.

Guest what, no one believed it was happening to me then As I said nothing since TT

Go figure doctors 🤓🤓

Well, Gcart, I may be cynical - perish the thought ;-) - but when I saw an article about this online yesterday I immediately thought about the continually shifting goalposts in lipid protein identification, and associated cholesterol treatments.

I am borderline T2 diabetic (actually diabetic by some measures) and though I've been reading up on the subject over the past few months, I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable about the area to comment much further. That said, there is enough controversy around the whole subject of diabetes diagnosis and treatment for my suspicions to be aroused...

I didn't really understand the article at all as it has long been known that there are more than 2 types of diabetes and they respond differently to different medication.

Unfortunately there are a lot of genetic variants involved in both diabetes and in thyroid problems which makes researching painfully slow - even with techniques that allow mass comparisons across huge numbers of samples.

I know people like to think that treating diabetes is simple - and sometimes it is - but sometimes it isn't. The only difference is that blood sugar levels are much easier to measure and the hormones involved respond a lot quicker than thyroid hormones - but most of the damage with diabetes happens in the background from all the little hiccups in the day that may go unnoticed.

Is that the case , it was already known? In which case it is daft going over old ground .

not necessarily - most of what I'm aware of is MODY which is a dominant gene so if you have the gene then you develop diabetes - there are however several subtypes and they can have very different responses to which medications work best. I think what is going on may be around trying to think about the categorisations in a different way - which could be useful as a grouping that made it clearer what was the best treatment ... and some precise tests that made it clearer which mechanisms were in play would be extremely useful for improving long term prognosis. That doesn't mean that there isn't also a lot of research going on into thyroid and other chronic conditions - it is just that some disorders are generally easier to do research into as the biomarkers are much more clearly defined and better understood so breakthroughs come in those conditions first and then can be applied to more complex situations.

Thanks you have give n me a clearer understanding of the need for research now. I had no knowledge about that which you have explained x

Hi Gcart, Further to what Hillwoman mentioned. - I do believe there could be a link of undiagnosed (missed) or undertreated low thyroid that can lead to Diabetes in some, as this is the pattern in 3 members of my family. All three have now sadly passed.

Also, it has been well known for a long time that High cholesterol has an inverse effect on low thyroid. Drs are prescribing people with high cholesterol or even mildly high cholesterol, and prescribing these statins pills, are they checking for low thyroid or under treated low thyroid firstly ? Well not in my family they didnt.

Then I am also reading that 77% of women over menopausal age, given statins is bringing on either pre diabettes or even diabettes, I know for a fact statins caused my Mum's diabettes to worsen, suddenly cause leg ulcers, kidney failure and the rest of he life on a kidney dialysis machine. There is definitely a link there somewhere for sure Gcart.

Thanks for bringing this topic up.

I was diagnosed with diabetes 11about 8 yrs ago. High cholesterol as well.

My problem has been weight loss . So not typical as I’m a stone ,so say, under my ideal weight for height .

Refused statins , I had diabetes monitored .

After diagnosis of thyroid cancer cholesterol has gradually gone down, and none of th symptoms I was having which, I attributed to diabetes, have gone .

Like a lot of others here a lot of suffering along the way.

Life has now become ‘ good enough’ after Many many years .

This forum has been my main/only information and support . Still visit ,, it gives me a place in the world . Thanks x
