First blood results on T3

Hi, I've just received my first blood results from Medichecks since starting T3. I'm currently taking 100mcg of Levo and 12.5mcg of Tiromel split into two doses. Could someone have a look at my results please and let me know your thoughts. Thanks

kazmacd1,

TSH & FT4 are low as is common when medicating T3.

FT3 is just under half way through range.

Both TGAb & TPOAb are elevated & could cause possible inflammation, indirectly causing thyroid hormones utilisation impairments.

Ferratin is low indicating iron deficiency. Iron is a common deficiency in hypothyroidism (due to gut malabsorption issues) & when levels are low it slows down the conversion of T4 to T3 (deiodinase activity).

Active Vit B12 is high. Are you supplementing ? ? …

Folate is much too low & should balance with Vit B12 as they both work together to help create red blood cells and make iron work properly. Also, folate keeps something called homocysteine in check. High levels are a significant risk factor of cardiovascular disease & disrupts thyroid metabolism at a cellular level by blocking T3 from binding with helper enzymes. You could supplement Methylfolate (B9).

You may find that by addressing your iron/nutrient deficiencies & reducing thyroid antibodies, thyroid hormone meds perform better or you may need to increase your T3 dose slightly.

You could look at adding a good vitamin B complex that contains folate

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 3-5 days before any blood tests, as biotin can falsely affect test results

You need to look at improving ferritin. Eating liver once a week should help improve levels

Are you on strictly gluten free diet? Your antibodies are very high confirming you have Hashimoto's

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

But don't be surprised that GP or endo never mention gut, gluten or low vitamins. Hashimoto's gut and gluten connection is very poorly understood

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

Ideally ask GP for coeliac blood test first
