Hello I just wanted to ask if anyone else out there with abnormal Thyroid and parathyroid levels suffer from depression? If so what do you recommend to take? I feel numb.

Thanks for any help.

Depression is a classic sign that your thyroid is not correctly treated

thyroiduk.org/tuk/about_the...

Do you have your latest thyroid tests? Plus if you have had them tested, vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 results and ranges

Have you had thyroidectomy that parathyroid levels are abnormal?

For full evaluation you ideally need TSH, FT4, FT3, TT4, TPO and TG antibodies, plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested

See if you can get full thyroid and vitamin testing from GP. Unlikely to get FT3

Private tests are available

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Vitamindtest.org.uk - £28 postal kit

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and don't take Levo in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results

Get up to date Thyroid Function blood tests done and Parathyroid.

Please DO NOT take any depression drugs.

Get your Thyroid sorted first, get Nutrients levels tested and treated if deficient in any (which you probably are) ask for the following levels to be tested:

Vitamin D, Calcium B12, Folate and and Ferritin.

Get copies of all tests results and put on here.

Have you ever had any tests to check you'd Adrenals? Ask for this also to be checked out.

Any other conditions?

On any other medications?

Underactive thyroid goes hand-in-hand with poor nutrient absorption - including those most vital to mental health - especially b12. Many people who have, or have had low vitamin b12 levels were at some point diagnosed with depression or another mental health issue. I know, because I've had depression twice (in my twenties), before I knew about this massive oversight!

Please get b12 and other tests done (also thyroid antibodies) asap and prior to trying out any b12 supplements - as blood levels can be skewed if you've recently taken the supplement and they won't give an accurate picture of deficiency. In my opinion, blood levels of b12 should exceed 500 at the very least to prevent deficiency symptoms. Unfortunately the UK sets the lower 'normal' limit to 180 - which is very low indeed.

If you get a low result you may want to follow up by posting to the PA forum.
