RAI and pulmonary fibrosis

I have just had RAI - 5 GBq - and was reading about side effects on this site when something called radiation fibrosis popped up. This has terrified me as my Grandad, Dad and Aunt all died from pulmonary fibrosis ( the same as Keith Chegwin?) - my Dad's was triggered by a general anaesthetic and he died 2 weeks later. There is obviously a genetic link but not much is known about PF and there is no cure. Have I raised the chances of developing PF by having the radiation? Scared stiff and I don't scare easily.

I think everyone would feel as you do especially if you have a family history of the same condition.

I think the best thing would be to ask GP to refer you to a Specialist who will be able to reassure you. It is no good worrying too much before you get a positive response.

There are many, many people worldwide who have RAI and I think if there could be a 'side effect' doctors should be/would be more knowledgeable.

This is an excerpt from the following link - under Lungs:

Some people need to have repeated radioactive iodine treatment for thyroid cancer that has spread to the lungs. Very rarely, they may develop problems with their lungs.

This part of the excerpt should be reassuring:

Lindsaydawson603,

I think that is referring to targetted radiotherapy beam treatment as opposed to a radioactive iodine capsule for thyCa.

Hi Lindsay ~ please try not to worry too much ~ stress is the worst thing for your health ~ I know this only too well! You have had so much on your plate over the last few months and getting stressed won't help your continued recovery. Clutter and shaws have given you good replies and maybe you could seek further medical advice to calm your anxiety. I expect in addition to discovering this, your concerns have been amplified by the fact that your hormones must be all over the place, given what you've just been through. I do hope your worries come to nothing ~ you deserve some good luck and also some good health ~ do let everyone know how you get on.

Thinking of you, and sending you warmest wishes for good health

PS sorry this is late ~ I didn't press the reply button dohhhh!
