Still feel awful

Hi I've been taking levo 159mcg for over two years,my blood as of this morning were in the normal ranges,so according to my doctor I'm fixed, there are no other meds except levo either he told me.

I suffer daily, fatigue, aching joints, swelling in my legs to the point my clothes and shoes don't fit. Loss of appetite, weight gain, headaches, intact I feel like of done ten rounds in the boxing ring.

My gp says I'm depressed,I've always worked full-time, constantly on the go,raised three boys and kept horses. At the moment I struggle to function.

Has anyone else felt this way?

Many Thanks.

There is so much more you can do to improve your metabolic activity. This is the key to enjoying better health. People with dodgy thyroids have just been given T4 usually and this is expected to make you fully normal. This just isn't the case, so we as patients need to get active and learn about what will improve metabolic function, as the T4 is just one part of the equation.

Firstly do you have your blood test results ? Very often docs will say everything is fine, but you can actually be low in thyroid hormone. Could you have hashimotoes disease whereby the thyroid is attacking itself ? This brings with it other complications, but the docs just wave their hands as if it is a minor issue.

What are your Vitamin B12, D, and iron levels like ? Low iron stops thyroid from doing its job properly. The same occurs with the other vitamins.

Do you know how your sex hormones are doing ? Low progesterone and high estrogen will inhibit thyroids activity.

There is a lot you can do to up metabolic rate and i am sure many others will recommend more supplements. The final main addition to your armour would be T3. This can have a big impact and can be bought on the net cheaply. It is in the news at the moment as there is a big outcry that doctors are no longer using it because the company who supplies the UK is charging extortionate rates. So a 30 day supply in europe cost about £2, but the NHS is being charged £900

I don't know my blood results he turned the screen to be told there are in the green so it's normal. My iron level again is in the normal range,my symptoms I was told are nothing to do with hypothyroidism more like depression and anxiety and to go home and do things I enjoy.

Think my other half believes i'm making it up.

I have a mirea coil fitted, and they won't test my hormone levels because they are unreliable ,as told by the nurse last week when she took my bloods. I've never been a sick person until I started this battle.

Don't ever bother asking a doctor what your results are, most have a god-complex and think you have no need to know. Just ask at reception for a print out of your results - don't accept anything vebally or hand written, receptionists often don't understand the results, just get a print out. In the UK we are legally entitled to our results under the Data Protection Act.

When you have the results, post them on the forum with their reference ranges which might be in brackets or at the side, eg. TSH 2.5 (0.2-4.2). We can then see what has been tested, whether you need an increase in Levo, what still needs to be tested, etc.

Hi thanks for your replies,I've never had a T3 test as there aren't routine as now I know not is the T3 meds in the UK. I will request my results and post them up.

Fed up of comments from people 'well you look ok'. Not sure people realise how much work for the day to day running of your body your thyroid does.

Thanks for you're help.

Kinda feel normal now.

Fed up of comments from people 'well you look ok'.

Gets on your wick doesn't it! Just say

"Well, walk a mile in my shoes then I can guarantee you wont say that"

I don't discuss my thyroid health with anyone unless I know they're hypothyroid too. Other people just don't understand, life's too short to explain it to them.

I get my FT3 tested, the lab does it because my TSH is always suppressed, freaks out the GP who goes "OVERMEDICATED" but I take no notice, just point out that FT4 and FT3 are in range so I can't be. Then she offers an endo appointment, and I ignore the remark (been there, done that, vowed never to see another endopig in my life!).

You can always do a private fingerprick test for thyroid to include FT3. Lots of us do, it's very helpful knowing if you convert properly or not.

Have you had thyroid antibodies and vitamins and minerals tested - Vit D, B12, Folate, Ferritin - nutrients need to be optimal for thyroid hormone to work and very many of us are low or deficient and need to supplement.

I believe the latest bloods tested kidney function, iron and the unusual thyroid which I think are TSH/t4.

I can't get any go to test my T3,just changed doctor and was hoping he understood but apparently not.

The last blood test was taken at 11.00am after I had taken my daily dose of levo 150 much, after reading other comments it should of been different.

Thanks for your reply I find this forum wonderful, wasn't aware there were so many people suffering.

It's the lab that makes the decision to test FT3, based on TSH and/or FT4 results, even when the doctor requests it. If you want to know your FT3, do a private test, as mentioned, as part of a thyroid bundle.

First of all can you post your recent results and ranges. What a GP considers as fine is often anything but

For full evaluation you ideally need TSH, FT4, FT3, TT4, TPO and TG antibodies, plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested

I doubt all these have been done. See if you can get full thyroid and vitamin testing from GP.

Private tests are available if GP is unhelpful

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/testin...

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and don't take Levo in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after. This gives highest TSH and most consistent results

Print this list of symptoms off, tick all that apply and take to GP

If you have high antibodies this is autoimmune thyroid disease also called Hashimoto's

Extremely likely to have low vitamin levels as Hashimoto's trashes gut function.

When vitamins are too low thyroid hormones can not work properly
