Should I try to treat my thyroid if I am allergic to the medication or fillers in it?

I am new here. Several years ago, I was borderline hypothyroid with symptoms. I was put on Synthroid/Levo and had a bad allergic reaction. After a long, long time and a longer story, I was switched to Armour. The allergic reaction only went away when they took me off everything. Along the way, I also had an allergic reaction to bioidentical HRT, but I can take Prempro no problem.

Now, my thyroid numbers are not good, and the related symptoms I was having before are still here. Here are my new numbers. All of the results are from 10/24/2017 except the one from 2014.

THS 8.35 mciu/mL 0.40 - 4.50 mcIU/mL

T3free & 2.7 pg/mL 2.3 - 4.2 pg/mL

T4free, .09 ng/dL 0.8 - 1.8 ng/dL

D -25 OH 41 ng/mL 25 - 80 ng/Ml

B12 501 pg/mL 271-870 pg/mL

(1/21/2014)

Folate ? ?

Iron (FE) 98 mcg/dL 30 - 160 mcg/dL

Iron Binding Capacity 322 mcg/dL 228 - 417 mcg/dL

Iron % Saturation 30% 15 - 55%

Ferritin 306 ng/ml 12-207 ng/ml

ANA Screen Negative

Doc wants to put me on .25 mg of Triosinct. I am afraid of another allergic reaction. I already lost a ton of hair, and I don't want to lose anymore. Should I treat my thyroid? What can I do about hair loss? Any opinions you would like to share?

Dkmich,

It's likely that your hair loss is due to low thyroid. Taking Tirosint may help reduce hair loss once you are optimally dosed. Tirosint is a gel formulation so won't have the same fillers Levothyroxine and Armour tablets had. It was probably one of the fillers which caused the allergic reactions.

VitD is optimal between 40 - 60 ng/ml so you may want to supplement 1,000 - 2,000iu D3 daily Oct - Apr. Take D3 4 hours away from Tirosint.

B12 501 is unlikely to be deficient.

I am prescribed to take 50,000U of VitD once a week. I have been remiss and missed too many weeks. I will be more diligent. I am going to give the Tirosint a try. My doc also thinks it was likely one of the fillers since I also had a reaction to bioidentical HRT from a compounding pharmacy. I have had so many allergic reactions to drugs related to hormones, I think I can now recognize one on sight. This too will be a big help.

Thank you for the feedback.
