Has anyone else had tyrosine reduced when they get older? I'm 63 and have been reduced from 125mg to 75mg. I don't feel I function well at all on this lower dose.

Do you mean thyroxine?

You should never have had a reduction of 50mcg in one go, it should be done in increments of 25mcg.

What were your test results which prompted the reduction? If you don't have them ask at your surgery for a print out, we have a legal right under the Data Protection Act to have them. Make sure the reference ranges are included then post on the forum for comment.

Yes, thyroxine sorry. It was reduced over 2 x 25mcg. I don't know the test results which gave a 26 reading which is too higher so I've been told. I've never really thought much about the thyroidectomy about 30 years ago and have taken thyroxine since then. Blood test booked for tomorrow and gp appointment in 2 weeks as follow up.

Most doctors go by TSH alone, so if your TSH is 26 you are very undermedicated. The aim of a treated hypo patient generally is for TSH to be 1 or below or wherever it needs to be for FT4 and FT3 to be in the upper part of their respective reference ranges when on Levo.

Your test results will be back a couple of days after they're sent to the lab. Go to the surgery and get a print out, don't wait for your GP appointment. Come back and post your results and include the reference ranges. Then we can take it from there.

For future reference, for thyroid tests always book the very first appointment of the morning, fast overnight and leave off Levo for 24 hiurs (take after blood draw). This gives the highest possible TSH which is needed when looking for an increase in dose or to avoid a reduction.

Hopefully this reply will work this time. Thank you very much for your help. I had blood samples taken at 1.40pm. I did take Levothyroxine this morning about 8.15 and will just have to wait for the results. I will ask for a print out and post them on here. I know something is wrong with this level of medication and would prefer to go armed with information. I'm also not happy/comfortable with the GP supervising the medication level. It used to be done by the Thyroid Register in Aberdeen.
