Just looking for some help please, my 14 year old daughter has hashimotos, and a visible smooth goitre. Her tsh levels are 4.8 which and her t4 is low but in range.
Sick children endo said they will not treat her till tsh levels are over 10.
The problem with current endocrinological thinking is that if someone is beginning to suffer hypothyroidism, a delay in treating doesn't matter because the body will quickly correct itself by treatment as soon as it is started. The problem with that thinking is that it assumes the body is like a car and can be started up instantly. This isn't the case - if someone is underactive for a while, the body adjusts to this, and when delayed treatment starts, it can be hard to retrain the body to return to its old healthy state.
I don't know if it is the same for children, but NICE guidelines state that if an adult has symptoms of an underactive thyroid, but their T4 is within range and their TSH is between 4 and 10, a trial of levothyroxine can be prescribed. How about suggesting this to the Endo?
