Usually, if we have hypothyroidism, stomach problems can arise.

Usually, due to hypo, we can have low stomach acid and because both high and low acid have very similar symptoms we get prescribed antacids as I doubt many doctors are aware of low acid in hypo patients..

I am not medically qualified but I was prescribed antacids and it made me worse and when I switched to Digestive Enzymes I haven't had any problems at all since. Not every one is the same.

Other members will respond and if you look on the right hand side column you will see there has been past post re Omeprazole.

I used to get terrible indigestion and was on omeprazole. Since changing my diet so that I eat low carb and high fat, I've not had any trouble whatsoever with acid. Which, I'm very pleased about, I have to say, since the recent reports of Omeprazole being linked to heart attacks. Digestive enzymes also help.

It's more likely when hypo that we have LOW stomach acid, not high acid. Virtually identical symptoms but very different treatment

but even if it is actually low stomach acid, you can not just stop omeprazole, but need to ween off slowly and replace with alternatives

Lots of posts on here about how to improve with Apple cider vinegar or Betaine HCL

Do you have Hashimoto's? high thyroid antibodies? You need to know. Did GP or Endo ever test these? If not ask that they are tested.

If antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known as autoimmune thyroid disease). About 90% of hypothyroidism in UK is due to Hashimoto's.

Hashimoto's very often affects the gut, leading to low stomach acid, low vitamin levels and leaky gut.

Low vitamins that affect thyroid are vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12. If they are too low they stop Thyroid hormones working. Have these been tested, if not ask that they are.

If have Hashimoto's and taking omeprazole low B12 is likely

Always get actual results and ranges on all blood tests

The reason you need to know if it's Hashimoto's is that very likely hidden food intolerances can be causing issues, most common by far is gluten.

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms. Very, very many of us here find it really helps and can slowly lower antibodies.
