Mixing brands ?

Hi all, my doctor increased my Levothyroxine today from 50 mcg to 75 mcg thankfully.

I am now in possession of 50 mcg Activis tablets and 25 mcg Mercury Pharma tablets.

Is it ok to mix brands ? ?

Thanks.

There is no guideline to say you shouldn't mix formulations of Levothyroxine but personally if it were me, I would not mix because it's difficult to know which you've had problems with if you find you don't feel well. I think that it's better to keep it simple. I would just split a tablet or take alternate days and stick to same formulation. I've had so many issues with Levothyroxine that I'm very conscious its possible to get poor quality, bad batches and tablets that don't suit.

Oh gosh ! I would never have thought of all that . I thought there would have been a ' standard ' that all manufacturers adhered to. Do you think I could return them and ask for the 50 mcg equivalent and split them ?

Milpol,

Your prescription was for 75mcg so your pharmacist will only be able to dispense 50mcg+25mcg or Teva 75mcg. Most pharmacies won't take back prescription meds which have left the shop anyway.

Why don't you try them and see how you do? If you have problems stop taking Mercury Pharma 25mcg and take 1.5 Actavis 50mcg instead and ask whether the pharmacist will swap the MP 25mcg for Wockhartdt 25mcg.

Many thanks Clutter, I will.

I think I am just over thinking it.

I will take your advice and see how it goes. 😀

Yes, in the UK there is a standard that all manufacturers adhere to and the MHRA are the regulators. Levothyroxine is challenging for manufacturers to produce and a few years ago the regulations were tightened up when it was found that generic levothyroxine were not all bioequivalent so they didn't all have the same potency as they were supposed to. Different formulations use different fillers to hold the active ingredient and people can have different reactions to them. Any medicine can have a bad batch so there is a yellow card system to report any problems. Levothyroxine is affected by heat and moisture in a way that other drugs are not as it's an unstable drug so the manufacturing processes have to be tightly controlled.
