Has anyone had their thyroid zapped with radio iodine?
It's what they are suggesting for me but I know it will make me hypo and that scares me so I am thinking of staying on 5 mg of carbimazole and just leaving it....

I would try other ways of controlling your hyperthyroid issues like diet and supplements whilst on carbimazole before resorting to radioactive or surgical treatments personally.
How do you feel on 5mg? Do you have your last thyroid results?
If Carbimazole suits you and you feel well on 5mg I certainly would not have anything done to my thyroid!
Really? That's interesting as I do feel fine and feel like I'm being pushed a little bit here. They said that by staying on carbimazole I will shorten my life expectancy by 10 years
I haven't got the last results to hand but they were well in range
Ask for evidence of that claim.
Ok, do you doubt it then?
I've been trying to do some research but can't find anything
On the basis that doctors use scare tactics to make patients do what they want all the time, then yes, I doubt it. I've been reading thyroid forums for a few years, and I've never heard that particular claim before. If it was true I think I would probably have heard it before. I'm prepared to be surprised though.
How long have you been on Carbimazole?
I have lost my bookmark, but I found a research paper that said that if one was to have problems with e.g. wbc, liver due to antithyroid drugs they will appear in the first three months of taking them.
There are people who have been on Carb for up to 13 yrs with no ill effect.
As HB says, ask for proof. Seriously, don't be bullied! If you were feeling unwell, if you were having side effects from the medication, then that's a different matter.
Have they even suggested you stop the Carb to see if you go into remission? I did.
