I have finally been prescribed liothyronine 10mcg x 2 morning and pm. How long before I will start to feel the benefits.

Hi - t3 is quicker acting than t4 so you should feel some change within a few days. 20 mcg is quite a bit to start on, you may find you have some problems with that. It might be better to take just 10 for a couple of weeks then add in the other 10 to give your body a chance to absorb it more gradually.

Good luck

Gillian

Thank you. I look forward to feeling something like normal, it's been far too long.

I think that is how Dr Skinner started me.. I felt a difference within a couple of days. Hope you get the same.

Are you really stating on 10mcg morning and 10mcg in afternoon? That seems quite a large dose. Also are you reducing T4 at same time?

I have just started on T3, under medical supervision Initially I did 3 days at 2.5mcg morning and pm (yes it was a speck of dust!) before increasing to 5mcg am & pm. At same time reduced T4 by 25mcg. Even that change was all quite a jolt, but is now settling. Blood test after 6 weeks at this dose, before considering possible increase

Having read your previous post, your bloods were a lot lower than mine, especially T3.

Do you have Hashimoto's? (High antibodies) if so are you, or have you tried gluten free

What are you levels of vitamin D, folate, B12 and ferritin like?

Hi SlowDragon, I've reduced thyroxine from 150 to 100 and introduced 10mcg liothyronine morning and lunchtime. My antibodies were within normal range last time they were checked. Never had vit D folate or B12 checked and ferritin waswas

Ferritin was 50

Suggest you get them all checked ASAP. We need them all at good levels for T4 or T3 to work in cells

Ferritin needs to be around 70

Very common for them all to be low

Medichecks or Blue Horizon can do all 3 privately if GP won't

Folate & B12 work together.

Just Vitamin D private tests available from vitamindetest.org.uk - £28

Hi SlowDragon, I've had blood test as suggested and here are my results

Serum vit D 53 >51

Serum folate 6.6. >3.4

Serum ferritin 81 20-291

I believe these are all normal. Any advice would be gratefully received

Vitamin D much to low needs to be at least 70, nearer 100 nmol/L (Uk measurement) is better

Supplement at least 2000-3000iu daily and retest in 3 months

See lots of supplement replies by SeasideSusie

Eg

Folate tells you nothing without also B12

Do you think my ferritin levels are okay

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAmbassador in reply toTldg45

Ferritin seems a bit low. I don't know anything about that really. I have always had over range ferritin so never had to learn about that

SeasideSusie is good on ferritin

Tldg45 Serum ferritin 81 20-291

This should be half way through it's range so you're aiming for around 135ish

Assuming there's no iron anaemia then some iron tablets, Ferrous Fumarate (from Amazon) if you can take them with no problems, or Solgar Gentle Iron but they have less elemental iron.

Take each tablet with 1000mg Vit C to aid absorption and help prevent constipation, and take iron four hours away from thyroid meds and two hours away from any other medication and supplements as it affects their absorption.

I couldn't tolerate iron supplements and got my level up just by eating liver once a so you could also do that, maximum 200g a week, and include lots of iron rich foods in your diet

Serum ferritin 81 20-291

My B12 results has just come back

288 (211-911)

Too low, recommended to be at least over 500.

Supplement sublingual B12 lozenges, probably 2-4 per day of 1000mcg

Plus good quality vitamin B complex to keep all the B's balanced (taken with food at breakfast - can make you feel a bit wired first few days)

Remember to stop B complex 4-5 days prior to any thyroid tests as it contains biotin
