Taking levothyroxine several hours before breakfast

Hi

I take levothyroxine 25mcg at about 5am and go back to sleep. Then I have breakfast around 9.

Is this okay, or do I have to only take it half or one hour before breakfast?

That's fine. Many like early a.m. dosing. Your stomach is definitely empty before and after you take levo. Your dose is very low, normally 50mcg is a starting dose with 25mcg increments every six to eight weeks.

When you have blood tests due, always have the very earliest one possible, fasting you can drink water) and allow a 24 hour gap between last dose of levo and test. (you can miss your 5.30 a.m. dose and take after test then contnue as you usually do.)

Ask for B12, Vit D,iron, ferritin and folate to be tested as we are usually deficient. Everything has to be optimal.

Thanks. I should probably get the test done as per your recommendations (didn't do it that way and wasn't advised to!) and ask for the other tests as well.

I have already been worried about vit D for some time since I started to have far less sun exposure (few years now!).

Your GP shoud do them. Say you have joined Healthunlocked Thyroiduk.org for advice and have been recommended to have all vits/minerals optimum (we are usually deficient in some).

Hi yes it's fine to take Levo at 5am and then have your breakfast at 9am. At least l 1 hour before food and drink except water or at least 2hrs after eating longer is fine . I also put alarm on early and then go back to sleep for a while.
