The only way to lose the weight and the fatigue is to optimise your thyroid hormones. There is no magic bullet. It all takes time. But, things will slowly get better. We just have to be patient. Trying to take short cuts can land you back at the beginning again, having to start all over. :)

Thank you know nothing about it all as just diagnosed and was told I was 9.7 and had to go on meds

Yes, doctors are very bad at explaining - probably don't understand much, themselves!

That 9.7 would have been your TSH - Thyroid Stimulating Hormone. You need it to come down to one or under.

I presume the 'meds' are levothyroxine, which is a hormone, not a drug. It replaces the hormone your gland can no-longer make. Did your doctor tell you when to go back for a retest? In case he didn't, it should be 6 weeks after you start the levo.

When your go for your retest, makes sure it's early in the morning - before 9 am - and fast over-night. Leave a 24 hour gap between your last dose of levo and the blood draw.

Did he at least tell you how to take levo? For optimal absorption, it should be one hour before eating, with a large glass of water, and leave an hour before eating or drinking anything other than water. Are you taking any other supplements or medication?

I take vitimin b12 but now my latest result tshlevel 2.87

Serum free t4 14.6

Serum alkaline phosphates 151 doc says slightly elevated is this to do with the under active thyroid

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply toAndrew1955

2.87 is still too high. It should be one or under.

The increased Serum alkaline phosphates could be to do with thyroid, but you'd need more tests to find out exactly, I think. But, if your doctor isn't worried about it, I wouldn't be, either.

Doc put me up 4 days ago to 75 he is more interested in getting my one higher never mentioned the lower one

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply toAndrew1955

I'm sorry, I don't understand that - getting one what higher? The lower what?

Andrew1955 profile image
Andrew1955 in reply togreygoose

The one Thai is now 14'9 he did not mention anything wrong with 2.& one

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply toAndrew1955

I'm sorry, I don't understand any of that. What does 14'9 mean? Is that the TSH? And what is '2 & one'?

Andrew1955 profile image
Andrew1955 in reply togreygoose

Tlevel 4 14.9

Serum free 2.9

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply toAndrew1955

No, I'm sorry, that still doesn't make any sense. We need to see the TSH and the FT4, with the ranges. They should be written something like :

TSH 14.9 (0.5 - 5.5)

FT4 2.9 (12 - 22)

Or similar numbers. Put your own numbers in. :)

Andrew1955 profile image
Andrew1955 in reply togreygoose

Tsh=2.8 (0.27-4.2)

T4 14.6 (12 22)

Andrew1955 in reply toAndrew1955

Sorry should I go of all vitimin

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply toAndrew1955

Why would you do that? What vitamins are you taking?

Andrew1955 profile image
Andrew1955 in reply togreygoose

B12 and b1

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply toAndrew1955

Are you taking sublingual B12 (methylcobalamin)? If so, you should be taking a B complex with it, with all the Bs, not just B1.

Andrew1955 profile image
Andrew1955 in reply togreygoose

Yes victim in b12 but got another test done now my alkaline phosphates 151 he said slightly elevated never had this b4 don't understand it all

Thank you

Andrew 1955 - a good place to start learning about thyroid disease is ThyroidUK's main website (this is their forum).

thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_...

Work your way down the menu on the left hand side.

Any questions, just ask, plenty of members here to help out :)

One thing I would say, learn as much as you can because doctors don't seem to known very much and as a consequence many patients remain unwell. Read and learn, you may need to use the information in the future.

When you have your next blood test, book the very first appointment of the morning, fast overnight (you can have water) and leave off Levo for 24 hours. This gives the highest possible TSH which is what is needed when looking for an increase in dose or to avoid a reduction. Do this every time so that you have continuity of conditions which means that you can compare results accurately. Keep a note (spreadsheet?) of all your results - date, time of test, results, reference ranges, dose of Levo, how you feel, etc. It will become invaluable.

Always take your Levo on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after food, with water only, no tea, coffee, milk, etc. If you take any other medication or supplements then there's a possibility they could affect the absorption of Levo, so leave two hours between (four hours for iron, Vit D, magnesium and calcium).

Now I have this alkaline phosphates 151 said slightly raised is it to do with my thyroid of other mess intake nexium vitiminb12 I take all together don't understand it all

Thanks in advance

Are you saying you take your levo with all your other tablets? That will reduce absorption of the levo. Levo should be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour away from food or any drink other than water, and two hours away from other medication or supplements.

Tsh 2.8 (0.274.2)

T4 14.6 (12-22)

greygoose profile image
greygoose in reply toAndrew1955

Ah, that's better! So, you are under-medicated. You need an increase in your levo. :)

SeasideSusie profile image

Andrew - alkaline phosphatase is part of a liver function test.

Andrew1955 profile image
Andrew1955 in reply toSeasideSusie

Done that slightly elevated but this is from I went on Levo

Andrew1955 profile image
Andrew1955 in reply toSeasideSusie

Yes but when read up on it

It can come from underactive thyroid and when on meds a while it should settle

If you have not had thyroid antibodies tested, ask for this to added as additional test next time.

You need to know if the cause of thyroid being low is autoimmune- called Hashimoto's. In UK most (approx 90%) is autoimmune, but Dr's tend not to test or inform patients.

You may do brilliantly just on Levo, (majority do) but if not then if you have Hashimotos many of us find changing to gluten free diet really helps.

Hello Can I ask why you have suggested 2,000 mg Vit C per day ?

SeasideSusie profile image
SeasideSusieRemembering in reply toTJc64

TJc64 - Vit C is one of the general supplements recommended for us Hypos, and it supports adrenals.

TJc64 profile image
TJc64 in reply toSeasideSusie

Thank you . I have very low cortisol levels . So I will increase my Vit C . Much appreciated.
