How do I go about being tested for Coeliac please? I am planning to ask my doctor to check me for it because of stomach problems and having low nutrient results as well as having Hashimotos.

Thank you.

first of all, do not stop eating gluten, the tests need gluten in your system to show up a problem and just ask your GP to have them done.....

You just need these two blood tests from your GP:

Total immunoglobulin A (IgA)

IgA Tissue transglutaminase antibody (shortened to tTG)

There is a genetic test also but they wont diagnose on this anyway.

There is a high rate of false negative results though and often does not show up in blood tests so an endoscopy would be needed to rule it out. You would want a a referral to a gastroenterologist to see what's going on there anyway.

Even so, there are many who test negative on both and still have issues - NOn-coeliac Gluten Sensitivity so if all else fails and the doctors wont investigate further and you're back to square one, you could give gluten free a trial anyway but would need to be for 2-3 months and 100% gluten free to know for sure.

For the tests to come back positive, you need to have eaten gluten twice a day (bread/pasta/etc) for a minimum of six weeks before the test :-)

Endoscopy should also check for H pylori (gut infections are more common with Hashimotos)

I had coeliac blood test twice, 20 years apart & endoscopy last year - medics were still undecided if it was coeliac or gluten intolerance. Subsequent DNA test was then done which said it was unlikely coeliac (but still not 100% sure)

Personally I wasn't bothered about getting a coeliac diagnosis as going gluten free was a fantastic improvement.

According to Isabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist, the Hashimotos patience she sees about 90% find gluten free is noticeable improvement, but only 10% diagnosed coeliac
