I'm certainly not as educated as most that will reply but you are almost definitely suffering from an under active Thyroid. You also have Hashimoto's which is an auto immune disease which is very common with the condition.

Others will no doubt advise on extra blood tests for vitamins etc as you may be low which could cause you to feel low.

Hopefully your GP will act upon these results and start you on medication.

All the best, remember your not alone in this.

Simonmerson,

TSH is over range which indicates primary hypothyroidism. FT4 is low-normal but that is because the TSH is flogging the thyroid to produce hormone. If this is your first abnormal TSH result your GP may want to repeat the thyroid test in 2-3 months to rule out non-thyroidal illness elevating TSH. I think with the high thyroid antibodies it is almost certainly primary hypothyroidism and it would be pragmatic to commence Levothyroxine to improve thyroid levels now.

Thyroid peroxidase antibodies are positive for autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's). There is no cure for Hashimoto's which causes 90% of hypothyroidism. Treatment is for the low thyroid levels it causes. Many people have found that 100% gluten-free diet is helpful in reducing Hashi flares, symptoms and eventually antibodies.

For maximum absorption Levothyroxine should be taken with water 1 hour before, or 2 hours after, food and drink, 2 hours away from other medication and supplements, and 4 hours away from calcium, iron, vitamin D supplements, magnesium and oestrogen.

It takes 7-10 days for Levothyroxine to be absorbed before it starts working and it will take up to six weeks to feel the full impact of the dose. Symptoms may lag behind good biochemistry by several months.

You should have a follow up thyroid test 6-8 weeks after starting Levothyroxine. Arrange an early morning and fasting (water only) blood draw when TSH is highest, and take Levothyroxine after your blood draw.

Simonmerson,

If you are diagnosed with hypothyroidism you are exempt from prescription charges. Your pharmacist or GP receptionist can give you an exemption form to complete. Any prescriptions you obtain in the meantime your pharmacist should give you a receipt and another form so you can claim back prescription charges until the medical exemption card comes through.

Your GP will probably prescribe Levothyroxine. NDT isn't licensed for UK use so if your GP is prepared to prescribe it he would have to prescribe it on a named patient basis and would probably need the approval of the CCCG first.
