Hi, I am new here. I have just been diagnosed of Hyperthyroidism and is on 30g Carbimazol and Propanolol 40 mg for the past 5 days but I am having difficulty sleeping. I have been introduced to herbs like Bugleweed and Motherwort, and was wondering if I can take the herbal tea while I am on Carb and Propanolol.

Herbs like bugleweed work as an anti-thyroid so it would work like doubling your carbimazol. So until you have been tested to see how the carb is working i would think bugleweed is a bad idea. However i believe lemon balm is calming and i don't know about motherwort, could be worth trying but be careful and consult an expert if possible

Hi there. I was diagnosed like yourself two years ago and was initially on a high dose of carbimozole and propranolol. It takes a while (several weeks) for you to start to feel that the carb to dampening down your overactive thyroid. I would advise against bugleweed as it may add to the impact of the carb and be too much too quickly. I was advised to take magnesium about half an hour/an hour before bedtime and this seemed to help.

Do you have blood test results? You are entitled to ask for them - make sure they give you the results plus the ranges. The ranges are written in brackets next to each result. These are very important as everywhere has different ranges). If you get the results - then write them up on here (including the numbers in brackets) and others will advise you as to whether you are on the right dose etc.

The other thing is to look at your vit/mineral levels as these play a crucial role in your thyroid health. If your doctor/consultant hasn't already done this blood test then ask them to test your Vit D, B12, Folate and Ferriten levels and again post on here. These levels need to be at their absolute optimum for you to start to feel better and get the best result from the carb and propranolol.

All the best.

Boil a banana (skin on) in water for a few mins. Take out and drink the water. Then eat the banana. Meant to work, my son swears by it!

Check your magnesium levels too as if low can affect sleep.

Kate, interesting idea. Once I read to put the banana peel on your skin where you have a rash. I had something on my ankle and tried it. It did go away but not certain it was the peel but I would try it if it happened again.

You can also rub inside of skin on your teeth as a natural teeth whitener :)

Thanks, Milliea and Katepots, really appreciate it.

My blood test results

T4 - 50.9

T3 - 26.5

I wld like to try natural methods but I can"t find a natural endocrinologist or here. I am Malaysian. Most of the people whom I talked too do not encouraged natural and advised me to go on Carb.

I started last Sat but wld like to slowly weaned off the drugs and then try natural method.

Hi jyong , I had this experience & it was very tough once I got diagnosed they put me on propanalol & carbimazole 5 mg per day I was suffering serious insomnia to the point it became a worry ,as I had a baby son couldn't afford to pass out with exhaustion either I was lucky with support from my family and my mum demanded I got something to help me sleep which I was against but got some sleeping tablets only sort term , but just before that I felt so strange I went to A&E they gave me diazepam to calm me & relax me. I also once relaxed came off propananol I put on a bit of weight I was a size 6-8 ,didn't hurt I just felt like a snail I started to slow down a bit. Just see your GP and explain. I was lucky cos within 8 months I knew I felt more strange demanded to see my Endo and he apologised I was being over medicated , I had gone back in range . So have been normal if there is such a thing , for over 2 years I get my bloods done reg and usually only need a good vit d & iron tablet to keep me on top form trying to keep my body well so my thyroid dosent go crazy again lots of relaxation if I feel my stress levels going up.
