Identical twins hashi's, goiters

Hi, one of my daughters has hashi's and is not medicated but has an appointment with a paediatric endo soon. Her identical twin has a large goiter but normal bloods, I have requested new bloods which we'll get done tomorrow. I'm trying to read as much info as possible and go to the appointments prepared but I'm so overwhelmed and worried that I'm going to let my daughters down, as I clearly can't rely on the doctors to the best for them.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Has your daughters been given a blood test for their thyroid hormones which should include TSH, T4, T3, Free T4 and (I assume you have the following) thyroid antibodies.

The tests should be the very earliest possible, fasting (they can drink water). If taking thyroid hormones a 24 hour gap between last dose and test is advisable and take hormones after test.

If you have a print-out with the results and ranges post them for comments.

If they've not had B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate it would be advisable as we are usually deficient.

The one with Hashi's has but when I asked the doc to do them all for 2nd daughter, he said he would only do them if the 1st tests came back abnormal, I am prepared to do private tests but he has already said that even if she has Hashi's he wouldn't treat, yet 1st daughter is seeing a specialist?!

If your daughter has Hashi's she should be given levo as stated by Dr Toft of the British Thyroid Association. Many doctors think (know absolutely nothing about dysfunctions of the gland) that if the TSH hasn't risen and the person has antibodies they don't need thyroid hormone replacements.

email louise.roberts@thyroiduk.org.uk and ask for a copy of the Pulse online article by Dr Toft. It is the doctors' online magazine. Highlight the part about antibodies.
