Why do you need additional potassium? Potassium is regulated by the kidneys and any excess excreted in urine. Supplementation is only normally needed if on loop diuretics, high or low serum levels of potassium can be dangerous and if any question of kidney disease needs to be closely monitored. High serum potassium can cause ventricular fibrillation and cardiac arrest and low potassium asystolic arrest. It is best to get potassium from dietry sources.
