Have you acted out of character, been unable to think rationally due to hypothyroidism?

Yes. Aside from brain fog, which inhibits rational thinking, it is known that hypothyroidism contributes to, or causes, some mental illnesses. For instance, google search on "site:hypothyroidmom.com mental illness". Unipolar depression from hypothyroidism is classic.

Thanks, Eddie83. Are you aware of any professionals who have expertise in this precise area of hypothyroidism.

Unfortunately there are very few professionals with expertise in any area of hypothyroidism. That's why so many people are suffering so much. The area you're talking about should be common knowledge in the field of psychiatry, but in reaity, the mental health side of thyroid disease is rarely achnowledged at all.

Can you explain more about why you're asking this specific question?

Pre hypothyroidism diagnosis and in stressful situations I became delusional for quite a long period - 2 years. Completely out of character.

Not uncommon. Has this resolved since diagnosis and treatment?

Been resolved satisfactorily with levothyroxine.

Really good to hear this :) If things start to slide backwards at all, it's a good clue you need your medication dose to be adjusted.

I suspect I have a similar experience. I also feel my memory and vocabulary have declined.

Was stress a factor, Allyson1?

50rosslyn there is a specialism called psychoneuroendocrinology, but in reality these specialists are like hen's teeth and my informal straw poll (aka a quick google) says they seem mostly to be in research, not seeing patients.

Never heard of anyone with both expertise in endocrine topics, and mental illness. A google on combinations of words like "mental illness thyroid endocrine psychiatrist" seems to produce hits.

Yes, when my meds are set at the wrong level I feel very depressed, lack confidence and don't want to do anything. Can't concentrate and have lost my sex drive.

Can anyone tell me what the correct range of T3 and T4 is and in simple terms what TSH is?

mcsquirty, Please start a new post of your own with your question about TSH, T4 and T3 and I'm sure you'll receive help. Questions that get tagged on to other people's posts often get missed.

Yes I can swing from feeling suicidal to being bright and chirpy with a good sense of humour........still working on balancing my hormones, I'm sure once they are in balance I will feel more 'me' again. I cannot wait for that to happen!
