My treatment for radioactive Iodine is on the 7th

I was wondering if there's anyone else who has had this treatment that can let me know what I be expecting of my health. Thanks for reading.

Well, good luck with it. There are several people on the forum who have had rai, some do well, others rue the day. Hopefully you dont have any problems like Thyroid eye disease as the rai can exacerbate it. Were you offered surgery as an alternative and have you considered it or were you told that rai was the simplest option?

Before you actually have the rai, find out what medication you will be given afterwards. If you have graves disease, you may need extra hormones in the form of t3. ( liothyronine). If you are offered dessicated thyroid. Armour, erfa, naturethroid, Grab it.

What are the reasons for you being offered rai?

Thanks for writing me back. Well I do have graves but my one eye is back to normal I have a goiter too and my doctor didn't mention surgery maybe because of my insurance labs were only for the tsh /t3/t4 and tsh is at 5.6. I only had taken a pill for two weeks six years ago not doctor called and said to stop it was raising my liver enzymes which I hack hep c. So I never was on pills again.

RFU,

That's not true. bantam12 , for one, has said several times that she doesn't regret ablating her thyroid gland with RAI and feels well on Levothyroxine post RAI.

RFU,

As you say, we are all different and some will do well post RAI and on Levothyroxine while others won't.

My friend's RAI went well in that she no longer requires medication. She has however had some problems with her eyes and had to have some minor surgery on her eyelids as a consequence.

You are wrong, again,

I will happily recommend RAI and Levo. I think the poster would rather be hearing from people who have actually experienced the treatment themselves.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Hiya, I had radioactive iodine 2x. Things to remember... you will feel sick not on the day you take it (though it does taste foul) but within a couple of days afterwards. If the dose they give you is really high, you will be in an isolation ward and most likely a gigar counter will be set off if you go near the door (this is to test just how radioactive you are any any point during your treatment) depending how well your body flushes the toxin you will hopefully leave hospital within a week BUT you shouldn't go near pregnant women or small babies for about 6 weeks afterwards because you are still radioactive!!! On the plus side once you have this done and you level out with your thyroid medication you should feel about 100x better than before

Isolation after RAI is only required for people being given high doses to treat thyroid cancer, for Graves hyperthyroidism RAI is a much lower dose and given as 1 tablet or occasionally a drink as an outpatient, takes literally a few minutes then the patient returns home. Each hospital will have guidelines to follow afterwards. I felt nothing after it, apart from following a few simple rules I pretty much carried on as normal. No side effects whatsoever.

Well I'm not staying at a hospital. The 7 th I go there take what they give me the I go home and back the next day and after that to my doctors office.

Hiya Bantum12, I have mentioned in a previous post that I had had thyroid cancer & as such had slightly differing viewpoint and experience to many on this forum in that I'm hypo due to complete thyroidectomy. Still living though so that doesn't suck quite as much as the alternative 😊 So my experience is with super high double dosage of Rai to eradicate any thyroid cells that might have escaped during surgery or through my cancer matatisising (possibly I just spelt that incorrectly) just before the surgery

Has your Dr mentioned LDN (Low Dose Neltrexone)? Im not sure about the spelling. I watched a series on Thyroid problems. They spoke with patients and Drs who had very good results with LDN. It's not radical as radiation and doesn't hurt your liver or kidneys as the other medications. It's given in low doses and is less expensive then other medications and has been around and tested.

No he hasn't. He just said if it's at borderline then RAI I'm wondering about my dog can she stay with me still while going threw this? I can't be without her. She doesn't adjust well without me.

Thank you all for the great replys.

Hi, I had RI freatment for hyperthyroidism. I became severely underactive afterwards but hospital gradually got me back to where ivneeded to be. I now take 75 levo and 50 on alternate days which is working for me. I am thankful that i do not have the severity of symptoms on levo experienced by many on this site. Good luck on the 7th.

I had partial surgery in my teens so RAI was the only option in my 40s when Graves returned. I had TED but a 3 month course of steroids when I had the RAI cured it, no problem since.

Everyone is different so it's wrong to tell everyone that RAI is the worst possible treatment, it works perfectly well for many people.
