Vitamin C is said to be helpful Mandy.

This is a link which might be helpful, suggests fresh orange juice or lemon etc.

I don't think 1/2 slice would give you much vit C. Cursor down towards the bottom of this page and you'll see "Sources of Vitamin C" as it seems to be a minefield. I've heard of Absoric Acid but it is said it's synthetic but gives a good list of fruits/veg.

Ascorbic acid can be made synthetically. But it is a bona-fide type of vitamin C that can be found in various sources of vitamin C.

There are also the mineral ascorbates --> sodium ascorbate, potassium ascorbate, magnesium ascorbate and a few others. They are less irritating to the gut than ascorbic acid.

When supplementing with mineral ascorbates it is important to realise that the sodium or potassium or whichever mineral is involved can give you quite a big dose, and this may not be desirable.

So, for example, each 1000mg of sodium ascorbate will give you 111mg sodium and 889mg of ascorbic acid.

If I had to choose a mineral ascorbate to take I would take magnesium ascorbate (if I could get hold of it and it wasn't too expensive) rather than sodium, potassium or calcium ascorbate.

Hi

Yes it's a pain in the xxx.

Have you had your dhea levels tested too? This makes a massive difference.

An orange contains 70mg of vit c. I take circa 4000 mg of ascorbic acid. You can find non synthetic powder at a premium. That said it does last a good while and I add it to the hot lemon!

3....33.16 (1.38 - 3.86)

4....15.05 ( 0.38 - 3.86)

DHEA sample 1 (am) 3.47 (0.25 - 2.22)

Hi thanks for sharing those. It is rarer for them both to be high.

This is my take on the results. I think you have two separate issues. Higher than normal cortisol is bodily stress say an illness/ less frequently people undergo mental stress say a bereavement but usually suffer from hypoglycaemia.

High dhea is usually caused by a low levels of melatonin.

Whilst the levels of cortisol are not consistently off the chart the spike in the afternoon will I suspect feel like you have had a few too many red bull drinks and you be in flight or fight mode.

As I don't know I have to assume sleep is not perfect?

if this is true you have to address the dhea first.

If you would like any specifics feel free to private message me.

Howard you and me are thinking the same, i might be way off here but 6 years ago we lost my mum to lung cancer, when the time came i told her to go and that we would be ok...we all stood in her room as she passed away

now theres not a day that goes by when i dont remember the words or see her eyes open before she went

the next year my TSH was 9.? but i want treated until 2 years later TSH10.8my heart rate increases in the afternoon and stays high until i take a beta blocker at about 9pm or i wont sleep because pulse is too fast

i dont sleep without melatonin im now on 9mg and still struggle

my concern is cushings (yet another thing to add the allready never ending health anxiety)

how do i lower DHEA

Howard39 profile image

My cortisol was higher but consistent all day.

My specialist is exceptionally good and has 8k patients with thyroid and adrenal issues- she never said I had Cushings so I assume it is pretty high to be in that category.

Are your thyroid and vit levels ok?

I take it your dhea levels were tested on 9 mg of melatonin. This is towards the top of the range but not the highest I have seen.

I am so sorry about your mum. I think this sadly has contributed to your condition and yes I have been in the same place too.

I know many people who take 10 mg of timed release melatonin plus St. John's wort or nytol.

I will ask her for you what the max dose you can safely take. I suspect if you could sleep better you can retrain your brain to get back to sleep etc faster.

Try to hang in there and I will ask her asap.

Best wishes

H

i think my cortisol is my own fault, last july i had highs but not quite as high, i treated with holy basil for a few months and started to feel better, endo wanted a 24 hour urine and dex supression test so i stopped HB, both tests came back good so assumed i was ok

i took the melatonin the night before i did this test but was on 6mg then

TSH 13.7 cannot increase T3 past 50mcg

thinking of trying NDT when i start feeling better as i simply cannot cope like this any more

vits have never been checked

i see a locum endo 21st october so will hand over a list of what needs checking (the reason for the locum is i complained to PALS about my other one and refused to see her)

thanks
