Welcome to our forum Dian09

I am sorry you are having a very unhappy time at present but have you been diagnosed with hypothyroidism? Why I'm asking is that many problems can be connected to low thyroid hormones but either the doctors don't do the necessary blood tests or go on by the TSH (thyroid stimulating Hormone) and the person may never reach a high enough TSH to be diagnosed.

First if you haven't already been diagnosed ask for the following blood tests:-

TSH, T4, T3, Free T4, Free T3 and antibodies. Also ask for Vitamin B12, Vit D, iron, ferritin and folate. Deficiencies in these important minerals/vits can also cause problems.

When you have blood tests for thyroid hormones, they should be the very earliest possible, and fasting although you can drink water. Leave about 24 hours between your last dose of levothyroxine (if you are taking any) and the test as this allows the TSH to be at its highest and that is mainly what the doctor uses to adjust hormones.

Get a print-out of your blood test results with the ranges and post on a new question for comments.

Because the thyroid hormones are required in the billions of receptor cells in our body, from top to toe, if we are deficient it affects everything so as you are also studying it's important to get your hormone deficiencies rectified.

I remained undiagnosed for quite a number of years and diagnosed with 'other' things. I never once had a blood test for hypo, even by Specialists who gave me different diagnoses but the right one.

If your doctor wont do all of the above, we have recommended labs who will give a small discount if you quote the Code Number.

It's very important you get a GP and speak to them about how you're feeling and what is going on. I would also suggest accessing your Uni's pastoral care. They will have counselling available and lots of other support for you and people in a similar position. You will not be alone. Try to do something everyday that you find relaxing it makes you feel good like a bubble bath, reading a chapter from a good book or magazine, doing your hair/make-up or a nice walk. It's can be hard but if you can manage it doing something nice for yourself can really make the difference. Let us know how you get on.

sorry you have been through so much of late. Good that you are going to try and find a GP and also would be good as others have said to contact the University's pastoral care - they may well have a counselling service.

Not sure how long the eating behaviour has been going on - but that would be a key thing to try and sort out. It puts you at serious risk of developing a B12 deficiency - or a folate deficiency which could both cause the depression and anxiety that you mention - as could thyroid. It also longer term will put you at risk of other things.

slightly way-out but you might also benefit from something like yoga or meditation and I'm going to suggest that you look at this post on another forum as I suspect that you may be suffering from intrusive thoughts and it might help you find a way of dealing with them that is more appropriate than developing an eating disorder

You can find a list of symptoms of B12 deficiency here

pernicious-anaemia-society....

You might also want to use the search for communities function under my communities on the top bar - next to your name - as there will be communities that can help with eating disorders - there is also the Action on Depression and Anxiety forums that might put you in touch with others who are going through very similar issues.

just read your post on Healthy Living a few days ago - so good you are in contact with other forums but might be worth looking at some of the others that were suggested on that post.

Eating disorders such as fasting and bingeing do tend to be highly psychological. It sounds like you are actually suppressing the past at the moment and that just means that it keeps cropping up - can't remember who on the other post said that it wasn't about not changing the past but changing the way you respond to it - but they definitely hit a nail on the head. Please do carry on talking to the psychologist - there is always a point in dealing with the past where things get worse for a while before the new ways of relating to it start to kick in - and you really shouldn't feel embarrassed about the problems you are having - it may not be the best way to respond but it is certainly isn't a unique way of responding.
