Hi I'm Sherie I was diagnosed with hochimotos 2... - Thyroid UK
Hi I'm Sherie I was diagnosed with hochimotos 2 yrs ago hate this feeling of being tired but can't sleep
So sick of feeling like this I wish it would go away I gained 20 pounds I know that don't seem like a lot but I have worked out my whole life I was the person who couldn't gain weight now I feel like a blimp and don't even want to look in the mirror
it is a huge amount, when a person, like myself only weighed 128lbs when 8 months pregnant! i went on to a total weight gain of 33 lbs, the first 23, came on in 2 months time! i had sores and acne all over my skin. I gained 11 lbs in one week, when my thyroid went low. I cannot loose a single pound since i have plateaued. It is from fluid and inflammation.
the insomnia is really messing with my head and i am afraid i will be put in a psychiatric unit again.
Cherie,
Welcome to our forum and sorry to hear you are feeling unwell.
If Hashimotos is caught and managed before mass destruction to the thyroid gland is done, it may be possible to slow (or even stop) the progression of the disease. However, two years it quite a long time to now be addressing auto immune issues.
An infiltration of white blood cells in the thyroid gland will cause an auto- immune response and inflammation in the body but enhancing regulatory T cell function (TH-3) will regulate activity in the Th-1 & Th-2 and T-suppressor cells which turn off the attack.
Vit D has been shown to influence regulatory T cells, which in turn modulate T helper cell expression and balance the Th1 and Th2 response. Gut flora plays a significant role in both cell-mediated (Th1) and humeral (Th2) immunity and studies show that this protective role can be maintained and modulated by taking probiotics. Specific probiotic strains can influence the secretion of cytokines to help balance whichever is the dominant T cells but you would need to investigate this yourself. Low stomach acid can be addressed using Betaine HCL with Pepsin..
I have read that acupuncture has been shown to regulate the Th1 and Th2 immune response and eating essential fatty acids (EFAs) and curcumin. Ensure a gluten free diet and healthy life style. All this will help thyroid function or meds work better even if it doesn't stop the attack completely. Make sure B12, Vit D, ferritin and folate are optimal.

This is an excellent rundown, thanks!
Ya witch probiotic is the best for hashimotos disease there r so many
Hi Sherie, your diet is important. Eating the right foods and staying away from the wrong foods can be healing but it is very difficult to determine for some people because they are not the same for everyone. But eating whole foods is a good start. Supplements can sometimes be helpful but not pharmaceuticals. You can look into Gaba and really a good magnesium supplement is effective in relaxation. (If Dr. Wentz approves)
me too..very little sleep since 2009 and i am very puffy. I am following izabella wentz with emails and seeing a functional medicine doctor now. I have been on every form and dose of thyroid meds and still feel terrible, infact getting worse than ever. i guess you figured out that giving a person thyroid replacement, while your immune system tears up your thyroid, makes absolutely no sense. i hate doctors.
Ya I just found her I'm so happy I did I went totally gluten-free but I have always eaten really healthy so that's not a problem for me. ..... and the food intolerance is the worst in my case every 6 months there is some thing else I can't eat......
I'm just wondering if we all alkalized our bodies would it go away disease can not live in an alkalized state
Sherie
The beneficial microflora in your gut needs a stable environment in which to grow and flourish. A pH of 7 is neutral—anything lower than 7 is acidic and anything above 7 is alkaline. All metabolic homeostatic control systems in the body exist and function in a "negative feedback loop" and only the correct PH balance in the gut will offer good homeostasis.
Hydrochloric acid (HCL) is the primary gastric acid secreted by your stomach and aids digestion and absorption of food & nutrients, helping to regulate the ph in the body. Many people will low thyroid hormone have insufficient gastric acid and so supplement Betaine HCL with Pepsin. ( Do not take with PPI's or if you have stomach ulcers).
Gut flora helps to digest food, synthesise vitamins, regulate metabolism, and make up your immune system. Common probiotics to help repopulate the gut and reduce inflammation would be Lactobacillus (LGG), Bifidobacteria and Saccharomyces Boulardii (SB).
They need to be taken long term in order to repopulate and propagate otherwise as soon as you stop taking your gut problems will return. Gut dysbiosis, candida & other gut issues will need to be addressed first.
Another proven gut anti- inflammatory is glutamine. I have found this to be very beneficial when taken with marshmallow and slippery elm.
