After the thyroid surgery
Have you just had surgery? If so it could be from the anaesthetic. and tubing you have in your mouth. I remember the awful taste very well and it made be quite sick. It goes after a couple of days. Deep breaths to clear it out of your system. If it's a few days after I got a bad taste and white tongue. I think this happens when the body is healing and 'cleaning up' damaged tissues which will be left over from the surgery. I just brushed teeth and my tongue and drink lots of water. Rest and recover. You may also get hand cramps as calcium levels are temporarily affected due to 'bruising' of your parathyroids which lie close to the thyroid. If this is bad ask about your calcium levels. Also ask and make sure you start on replacement T4 therapy soon so you don't go hypothyroid and get unwell. Best wishes in your recovery. X
I don't why but low thyroid can cause burning mouth syndrome, tingling tongue and horrible taste in the mouth. I have this and am hoping that it will disappear once my thyroid meds are levelled off.
How long does it take for this to go away
I am on NDT but still have the horrible taste in my mouth and no, I haven't had any surgery.
I guess you havent had RAI? I had a bad taste after my thyroid removal and I got to thinking it was a problem with my salivary glands not working after the radiation. But who knows if that was really it! I found sucking a boiled sweet was the one thing that improved it.
Since my TT my whole sense of taste and enjoyment of food has changed a lot. But now, two years in, I don't get really persistent bad flavours any more.
