Headache with overactive thyroid??!!
Hi Laurz2394, are you being treated for your overactive thyroid and do you know what your thyroid blood test results were along with their ranges? If you haven't had them checked already ask to have your vitamins D and B12 checked out along wth ferrritin and folates, you want all of these to be optimal for good thyroid health rather than having just scraped into their lab ranges and doctors will often say they are 'fine' when the are just within the range and you would feel much better with them much higher in their ranges.
I've got Graves Disease which is an overactive thyroid with antibodies, for a long time I kept a daily diary of how I felt and I started to look for it yesterday to see how I felt at the very beginning but I'm afraid my diary from that time seems to have disappeared at some point, anyway, I'm pretty sure I had a permanent headache back then. I remember felt very, very ill in the beginning, certainly for the first six or seven weeks - I wasn't able to take beta blockers so I had to wait for the carbinazole to kick in.
I spent the first four weeks on 20mcg a day, was tested again at that point and found that my second set of bloods were virtually the same as before I started the carbinazole, at that point I got a letter from my endo whom I had not met telling me to increase my daily dose of carbimazole to 40mcg a day and it was only after that that I started to feel a difference.
I don't think I would worry too much about the MRI - but I'm not you - I imagine I would be relieved to think that my doctor was actually taking me seriously and covering all bases. Hopefully the results will show no problem and treating your thyroid will solve the problem. Have you seen an endocrinologist yet and what treatment do they have planned for you?
Hi thanks for your reply, no he has send a letter to them for me to be seen asap, I'm on 45mg of carbinazole a day and I take 120mg beta blockers a day, he said I could have a tumour in my pituitary gland, but maybe he is just being over causes, he wouldn't tell me how high it was just said it was very impressively high. I'm only 21 and I have an 8 month baby I'm very worried of something being more serious
Gosh that's cheerful of him isn't it (sarcasm!) Still, it is better to be over cautious than to be too casual but he must have scared you to death when he said that.
Hopefully as he wants you seen asap he can do something to hurry your appointment along, it would be worth keeping on at him.
Make sure he checks your bloods again in few weeks if your appointment hasn't come up by then. You don't want the carbimazile to make you under active.
You are entitled to know the results of your blood tests and it is a good idea to get them - just say you want to keep them for your records. I found it really helpful to know them as my treatment progressed.
Good luck, I know it is an absolutely ridiculous thing to say but try to relax and not worry too much it sounds like your doctor is right on the ball and that's got to be good (and I have to say that I'm an Olympic Gold Medal winning worrier)
Aw thank you I'll ask next time I go, maybe the specialist will tell me the results, yes I'm such a worrrier my worst trait is Googling and convincing my self I have something sinister, I'm waiting for the Dr to ring me today with a plan of action will post when he rings
Do what I used to do, I took a little notebook with anything I wanted to know or was worried about. I kept it to bullet points though and tried not to have too many. I also had a page already marked out in headings for each thyroid test and its ranges plus anything else I had had tested, then at my endo appointment I just asked what the results were, opened my little book and wrote the result under the heading. I just did it as if I expected to be told and no one ever refused. First time I asked the guy wrote it down on paper for me but I got better organised after that, I also used to get print ours from my GP. I think it is good to show that you want to know about and are taking an active part in your treatment.
I am hypothyroid but have had a thyroid storm. One of the main symptoms was a chronic headache that did not subside (due to over production of T3, I assume). I was also sent for a MRI scan and it was all clear. I suspect that it is a precautionary measure to rule out other causes so try not to worry.
