Mjean,

Ugh, MSG should be banned. It would make me flush too. What about the gluten in pizza?

A chef was writing in the Telegraph a week ago on how msg has been wrongly done down.

Don't know about that, I remember going out for a Chinese meal with a group of people from work some years ago and having the weirdest sensation of what can best be described as someone drawing a veil or something from my scalp to my neck. I expected my face to be flushed but I was told my face was still it's normal colour.

I mentioned it to the person next to me in case I passed out or developed some sort of allergic reaction so that if need be she could get help. I have to say weird and unusual though it was I kept eating.

I'd never experienced anything like that before nor do I have any sort of food allergies.

The only thing I could think was that is was a reaction to MSG. I've never had anything like that since but I haven't had soup in a Chinese restaurant since, well I haven't eaten in a Chinese restaurant since.

Authentic chinese cookery would never use MSG.

It's only used in the western food as a flavour enhancer.

Bad reactions can include:

Headache

Flushing

Sweating

Facial pressure or tightness

Numbness, tingling or burning in the face, neck and other areas

Rapid, fluttering heartbeats (heart palpitations)

Chest pain

Nausea

Weakness

Had to be something that was in the soup. I've never felt like that before or since - such a sudden and strong sensation.

Naturel MSG is fine, it's the chemical version that causes problems. Although, I have to say, I've never had a problem with it.

The chef did comment about overuse in cheap Chinese restaurants. I recall that in 1969 ,in my first job in with little funds I ate in a Chinese every lunch time. Each day the soup was allegedly different ,even looked different ,but always tasted the same.
