Hi I have had some results today and the one that's confusing is Vitamin D deficiency with a component of early secondary hyperparathyroidism
Does anyone know what this means thank you x

Mmw-15, Was calcium tested too?
Hi yes calcium levels high and vit D levels low, it didn't say on the letter what they actually were, I've been to GP today and I'm being retested tomorrow, - calcium Vit D thyroid and parathyroid - hopefully will get the results Monday. I went back today because of how low I'm feeling I have been seeing a private consultant but I feel I've just been left at the moment, she said have bloods done after 8 weeks of the RAI treatment, it's now only been 4 weeks and I can't wait any longer, I have no energy and just feel not right . My GP agreed that I should be retested now x
Mmw-15, high calcium and low vitD suggests primary hyperparathyroidism. The parathyroid hormone test should confirm.
You'll be, I presume, sent also to have a scan of your parathyroid glands to discover which one/ones is not doing its job properly. When parathyroids are found not working well and producing certain symptoms, doctors advise extracting the problematic ones.
Thank you, when I asked my consultant about having a scan she said to wait for bloods and didn't really say much more, I only found out about it when the GP gave me a copy of the letter because I wasn't CC into it. I'm going today to have the blood tests then on Monday we will see what they say, I'm certainly going to fight for a scan if my bloods show there's a problem x
I didn't go for the special scan they recommended just because I found out, by going into anaphylactic shock once, that I am extremely allergic to a certain dye which I was injected with many years ago, so I'm under observation, so to speak. I've had high calcium in the blood for many years, but the moment I'll find out I'm losing bone density, I'll get in contact with a surgeon!! I was also told, by a radiologist that the special test (can't remember what it is called) doesn't always find the faultyparathyroid and it's only when the patient is under anaesthetics, and the neck is relaxed, then they find out which needs to be taken out. Just don't worry as stress can add to your not feeling well. Good luck.
Your endo will want definate evidence on bloods before asking for an ultrasound and sestamibi scan. If an adenoma shows up ( sometimes they don't) you will need a surgeon who has lots of experience with parathyroid surgery, the success is dependent on this.
hyperparathyroid.org.uk has lots of info
Hi. 'HPTH UK' will give info on parathyroid conditions including info on hyperparathyroidism, although it's primarily for people with Hypoparathyroidism. I was diagnosed with hypocalcemia (low calcium), vit D deficiency and secondary hyperparathyroidism. The site was very helpful in explaining the different types.
