Hi mado - I use Pink Himalayan Salt which is low in iodine. Iodised salt is usually white so has been processed and had all the good minerals we need removed.

Iodine is a difficult subject for thyroid conditions and in particular with Hashimotos as it can exacerbate a flare I have read. We only need a teaspoon of iodine throughout our lives but I know deficiencies can cause problems too .....

Type Iodine into the Search Box at the Top of the page on the green bar - press Enter on your keyboard and see what turns up :-)

My doc suggests iodised salt and even iodine supplements but I don't know if this recommendation is based on any science at all (sometimes I suspect this doc of a fair amount of wooly thinking).

If you are hypothyroid, you need to be really careful about supplementing with iodine.

Firstly, if you are not deficient, it can actually make you more hypothyroid and bring back your symptoms. Secondly, people with autoimmune thyroid disease really need to be careful as it may worsen their condition.

Having said all that, there is known deficiency in the UK now although the Government have not yet decided on whether iodine needs to be added to salt.

The best way to know if you really need to supplement is to have a test and there are a few different tests that can be done.

The iodine loading test is possibly the best test to do as this shows how much iodine your body disposes of (which shows whether you need to supplement). This test can be purchased from Regenerus Laboratories. For more information contact them on order@regeneruslabs.com or telephone 0333 9000 979.

Thyroid UK will receive a small donation for each test ordered.

Thyroid UK ran a webinar on this subject on 12th September for and a recording will be available for members shortly.

Thank you. I was in America for three weeks and they use iodized salt. I just wondered if I should carry on here. Thankyou I can make an informed choice now.

A well respected practitioner - I have not read this book - just an extract in a magazine. It did explain the benefits of good salt v processed though. Could be helpful....

I have very low Iodine and also had high TPO but went gluten free, so my antibodies have now gone! I have read dr Brownstein, very good book and also "hope for hashimoto's" by Dr alexander Haskell also very good. They both explain very clearly how to use Iodized salt and if you need it. I am about to embark on self treatment to raise my Iodine as I think that explains why my thyroid is severely atrophied. I wasn't able to take part in the webinar last week, that Louise mentioned so I shall be looking out for the recording.
