Results of my TSH are 5.2 after 2 months of levothyroxine
I did by using an Atkins diet rather than cutting calories, cut carbs, if it agrees with you.
What is your dose of Levo? Judging by TSH-only is tricky, since it is a pituitory hormone. Do you have fT4 and fT3 results? You might be needing an increase, depending on the numbers and the symptoms.
As for the weight loss, you dont want to cut your calories by much, because it will further slow down your metabolism and make loosing weight even tougher. Also, I agree with Heloise, cutting down on carbs is a good idea, just make sure you're eating at least 50 g of carbs a day. Got some research to back my statements up:
- "These data indicate that the increase in serum total and free T3 concentrations associated with glucose feeding reflects augmented total body T3 production from T4. The effect of the enhanced T3 neogenesis was generalized, as the T3 content was increased in each organ studied. Thus, glucose feeding has unique effects on T3 metabolism." ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/339...
- "The carbohydrate-free diet produced a 21 percent decline in resting metabolic rate (p less than 0.005) as well as a decrease in circulating triiodothyronine (41 percent, p less than 0.02) and insulin (38 percent, p less than 0.005) concentrations." colbycorrectivemovement.com...
- "...total fasting resulted in a 53% reduction in serum T3 in association with reciprocal 58% increase in rT3. Subjects receiving the no-carbohydrate hypocaloric diets for two weeks demonstrated a similar 47% decline in serum T3 but there was no significant change in rT3 with time. In contrast, the same subjects receiving isocaloric diets containing at least 50 g of carbohydrate showed no significant changes in either T3 or rT3 concentration...Our data suggest that the rise in serum rT3 during starvation may be related to more severe caloric restriction than that caused by the 800 kcal diet." ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/124...
Been researching this question for quite a while now)) Good luck!
I couldn't lose weight until my tsh was below 2 so you may find it a massive struggle yet. Have you stopped gaining weight that may give you an idea whether you might manage to lose when you watch what you're eating
Find a diet that works for you and aim for slow and steady like a pound a week or so. I managed to lose 3.5st with calorie counting but that might not work for you some have succes with weight watchers, atkins, paleo its one of those everyone is different scenarios.
Good luck!
