I have a over active thirod I am losing weight I was put on carbimazole but I don't take them what will happen
Star, it will help members to comment if you'd post your thyroid results with the lab ref ranges.
If you don't take the Carbimazole your hyperthroidism will remain unregulated and you may experience fast pulse and heartbeat, palpitations, breathing difficulty and diarrhoes. In the long term you will damage your heart.
Why aren't you taking it? If it causes intolerable symptoms your GP may prescribe Propylthiouracil (PTU) instead.
Hi star, yes I interested to know why you aren't taking the carb as I am on it and wondering if there is something I dont know!
If you have an overactive thyroid and you don't take the medication, your consultant will assume that they aren't working, and either put you on another form of thyroid medication (Propylthiouracil) or they might suggest you have surgery to remove part or all of the thyroid, or the other alternative, which is Radioactive Iodine destruction of the Thyroid. So it is always good to take the medication since you will not recover if you do not, which can lead to serious complications.
If. on the other hand, you cannot tolerate the Carbimazole, you really ought to tell your consultant.
Just as a matter of interest, do you know if you have been tested for Graves' disease antibodies? Is it your GP who is treating you? Graves' disease really should be treated by a thyroid specialist.

Unregulated hyperthyroidism can be at it's worst life threatening. Sorry to be alarmist and this is a worst case scenario but it affects every hormonal negative feedback system in your body with resultant off range blood chemistry values in particular blood sugars and as people on here have quite rightly stated heart problems. having had first hand experience of a close encounter with someone experiencing a 'thyroid storm' please take your Meds and check with your gp if they are not agreeing with you or your symptoms are not alleviated
Yes it can be very serious, when I asked my endo what happens if I decide to use a wait and see attitude instead of treatment he said 40 percent of sufferers would die of heart related complications. He said sorry but this is too serious a condition for me to pull any punches
