Wanted, Really Good Exercise Routine For The Older Person.

I have been going to the Gym for the last four years but had to stop in March this year as I could no longer afford it.

I've been looking on the internet for a comprehensive regime but there is so much and so many that I don't know how to choose. Has anyone found a regime that works for them and would like to pass it on? I want one that strengthens everything. I do have some health problems which prevent me using a treadmill (COPD. Respiratory, breathlessness) and a back problem (Spinal Stenosis) which means I can't walk many steps without support. I used to use the "Air Glider", non impact Ski type machine, I could do 20 minutes on that on a good day but obviously don't have one at home! I do ride a bike but only on the flat and very gentle inclines. I need a good overall routine, core strengthening and general overall fitness. It's difficult to achieve when you can't do the basics, that's why it was so useful to be able to use the machines at the Gym.

Any suggestions?

i bought a 2in1 cross trainer/bike...its great ..no impact ...can stand when feeling better and use as cross trainer or sit and use as bike..works everything and can do while watching tv :)

You could get a stationery bicycle rack that transforms your existing bike into an indoor exercise machine. This link tells you about the different ones bicycle-and-bikes.com/bicyc...

They are available at Halfords for example and also on line elsewhere

You could look out for The Body Control Pilates Back Book by Lynne Robinson, it has a lot of good core exercises and from what I remember varying levels so you should find something to suit you, there is a lot if good stuff in it.

You could also Google for simple exercises that you can do at home using things you have lying around the house, like weight lifting with cans of beans or bottles of water, it's all there on the internet.

The stationary bicycle rack is really good if you have a regular bicycle at home - we have friends in their eighties who use one - either that or look at the small ads and you will find someone wanting to sell one they no longer use - I got rid of one I was using as a clothes horse - in fact you could probably even find an air glider - obviously not the same quality as the ones in the gym but probably good enough.

Does your gym run 'Medical Referral' classes - mine dies them fir than hour twice a week - can't remember how long the courses run, you have to be referred by your GP but that shouldn't be too difficult, they are really good, everyone is kind and friendly :-)

Thanks for your suggestions, much appreciated.
