Could my poor balance to be related to my under active thyroid (even though it's appropriately treated?

I have real balance problems on stairs and wonder if this could be related to my thyroid.

I'm fine walking about but once I get to steps or stairs I'm like an old lady!

My balance was terrible when I was really poorly. I kept tripping over my own feet & bumping into door frames. It has all gone on treatment.

Hi Harry

I seem to be appropriately but my balance is still an issue - but primarily in stairs and on steps. I can't go down steps without a hand rail and I feel quite shaky going up.

It makes me feel really old and I think it's unnecessary

It could be a symptom of undertreatment, but it could also be something else. Do you have any blood test results? Have you had any other investigations? What sort of treatment are you on & for how long? Has it just come on recently?

Sorry for all the questions ;-)

B12 problems can cause balance issues. Have you ever had your B12 levels checked?

Unfortunately not many doctors check all that goes along with thyroid. Folate, ferritin, B12,vitamin D. As I am finding out I have problems with all of them as well as hashimoto. The serum b12 alone isn't always enough to uncover a b12 deficiency but it's the easiest place to start.

Just quickly googled and this article came up livestrong.com/article/4988...

I agree with chihiro - I too suffered balance issues. Please read the information on the website as it is so informative. Whatever your result is do not allow your GP to say it is normal if it is in range. It needs to be at the TOP of the range. On the website you will read that in Japan the lowest level is 500 and the top is 1300. In the UK the range is 180-900 - approx.. Anything below 450 can cause neurological symptoms and balance is one of them. Only 20% of what appears in the blood test is available at a cellular level where it is needed - hence the result needs to be HIGH. Do not take B12 supplements until you have been tested as results will be skewed. Also once on supplements testing is not significant.

Hope you soon feel better....

My balance was awful and any stairs or steps were a real challenge. Also co-ordination was poor. Much better now I'm treated.

i have had balance issues for many years and have recently been diagnosed with resitance to thyroid hormone so i think the two are correlated. The hypo takes a toll on the nervous system and the brain but be sure that B12 is normal and if it persists, do consider an appointment with neurology. Is the balance because you feel off or is there also muscle weakness....also can be thyroid related
