How do you obtain dessicated thyroxine if your gp hasn't even heard of it and refuses to look into it?
Some people purchase it online without a prescription...
Some people try 'educating' their GP... We have some information and some research which may help...

yOU either see a private gp, or you buy it online without prescription as many have been forced to do
Thankyou for that I've lost so much weight as a result of levo and feel so ill just can't go on like this. I take it the gps will still do all the regular testing to check your levels?
The term "desiccated thyroxine" is not one that is seen around the world. A doctor probably hasn't ever heard of it!
My preferred term is "prescription desiccated thyroid such as Nature-Throid, Erfa or Armour". It might help a little to use that or a similar term.
If your doctors are unwilling to do anything about looking into it or prescribing it you have two options. Find another doctor (privately, if necessary) and get them to prescribe.Or buy your own without prescription. The second is not a recommendation - it can be a tough path to follow and requires a good deal of reading up before even considering it. And both possibilities will have associated financial costs.

Thanks for your reply, the gp said he had never heard of it and was too young to remember people on it years ago! He also said he didn't want to prescribe something he know nothing about incase it went wrong and his name was on it! Wasn't offering to look into it even though he knows that levo is causing the most terrible side effects and making me skinny and weak with constant nausea and dizziness! I have got to pursue this as there has to be something else to take?
Many thanks for that not too bad price!
Tweed,
If your GP won't prescribe NDT have you asked about Liothyronine (T3). I was very unwell on T4 monotherapy but am recovering now on T4+T3 which endo agreed to prescribe when I 'fessed I had been self-medicating. PM if you want an online source.
Hi cutter I remember your reply the last time and I did ask for that but as the gp had asked the specialist for advice on prescribing liothyorine and he had it in writing not to and to leave me on levothyroxine, he now can't do that!!!! So frustrated have been refused by two specialists to be seen they just fob the gp off saying maybe it's coeliac etc even though I'm on a gf diet!!! So fed up now and I have proof that it's the levo doing this as I was off it for 6 weeks and gained weight and felt better even though my Tsh was 100 and T4 4. My thyroid antibodys were measured when I payed for blood tests and they stopped counting them at 1300! The whole thing is weird as I feel over medicated all the time on 125 and am supposed to be on 150! Glad you are getting there that gives us hope!
Just had a look RFU. £50 inc p&p! Thanks for link. Tweed, just search Thiroyd (correct spelling).
Hello
Have a look on the STTM website - lots of good advice in there - also I wholly recommend Dr Peatfields book "Your Thyroid and How to keep it healthy". I went to a private doctor in Winchester - could see I was not going to get very far with my GPs - he gave me the NDT - he specialises in thyroid probs - but your bloods sound horrendous - I think you need more help than you are currently getting - DO something!!! XX
Hi Sheenagh, i see this was 7 months ago but hoping you can tell me the name of the doc you saw privately in Winchester? Trying to persuade the nhs to prescribe ndt but not optimistic. How do you feel on it? I'm near Portsmouth so only 30 mins or so away. Thanks.
Hi Amie
Sorry just picked up your post today. His name is Dr Owen - I think it is thenaturalpractice.com He is one of ThroidUks reccomendations and he put me on a low dose of Erfa (NDT) and then I persuaded my GP to prescribe it. I changed to Nature Throid as Erfa gave me headaches. I bought my own from the Net so I could experiment with doses and am now on 3 grains which seems to be the right dose for me, and I am almost back to (ha Ha) normal. Fell free to ask me more! Good Luck!
Love Sheenah xx
Change GP! Or try and educate them with is often futile...iv brought armour online for the last 7 years...
