How is it that my calcium levels were up when m... - Thyroid UK
How is it that my calcium levels were up when my vitamin D levels were low? I have a hospital appointment in June.
If calcium is high the body lowers Vit D to reduce further calcium being absorbed. You need to have your parathyroid levels checked at the same time as calcium. Hyperparathyroid disease is something that should be ruled out. Be wary of taking VitD supplements if your calcium is high. Do you know your calcium level ?
If parathyroid disease is diagnosed then more info at hyperparathyroid.org.uk
Hi hypohen
Thank you for your reply. I am hypothyroid for over 30 years. Last year blood tests showed my vitamin D was low. My GP put me on vit D supplements. Then when I went back a different GP said I shouldn't be taking them and that my calcium levels were raised. I now have a hospital appt in June. The GP said it's not serious!? It's very confusing. Thank you once again.
High calcium can be serious, depends how high it is but it should never be over range. If you have high calcium and parathyroid hormone then it's likely to be hyperparathyroid disease. This occurs when one or more parathyroid glands go into overdrive due to benign adenomas . VitD will usually be low and many GP'S and Endos (unless they have hpth experience) will prescribe VitD supplements, these will further raise the calcium which is wrong.
I presume you are seeing an Endo in June, you need to find out if he/she is experienced in calcium/parathyroid problems, many are not which leads to a very long road to diagnosis, if at all.
If you get hold of your VitD and calcium levels then you can post them to us on the hpth forum for advice.
Hi hypohen
I am seeing a specialist in June about my calcium levels. So it should be sorted out. They did say in the letter that my 'treatment' should be complete in a few months. My GP said it wasn't serious! Hope not. Thanks for the info about vitD I understand it a bit now. Thanks. Madison1
Hi No matter how lo vi D is, if Calcium goes above range,D must be stopped. calcium is an electrolyte and must always be in range. endo.
