Is hypothyroid and Hashitomo's the same?

Still on a learning curve: was as the walk in GP centre and giving my history said Hashimoto's and hypothyroid to the Nurse Practitioner and she said "one and the same". Not seeing Endocrinologist for a while to ask the question. Sorry if this sounds a bit of a dumb thing to ask.

Not necessarily, no. Hashi's is the leading cause of hypothyroid, but you can be hypo and not have Hashi's. It depends if you have autoimmune antibodies. But treatment is usually the same

thank you: my antibody test results show up in the 1100 marker area and also my T3 T4 and TSH results are now being managed on medication so would this mean I have both?

Then yes, I would say that you are hypothyroid as a result of autoimmune thyroiditis/hashi's.

I had bloods done a few weeks back and although test are showing normal and levelled out and taking 175 levothyroxine. The bloods showed I was Vit D3 deficiency. I'm taking 20,0 iu tablets for D3 now for 3 months then will take 1000 per day. But I still feel terrible with severe headaches, dry skin, dry mouth, joint and muscle pain, constipation etc plus I have put on 5 stone and have swelling sometimes in neck with small lumps. My doctors said he thinks it Hashimoto's. What do you all think.

Without test results and ranges I am afraid we cannot help. TSH FT4 FT3 Anti-Tpo and Anti-Tg are the tests you need and the results with ranges for people to comment. Did you go straight onto 20,000IU's with the VitD or did you work up to it slowly ?

If your Doc thinks it is Hashimotos - then he should test your anti-bodies for confirmation.

Hi Marz. Yes I went straight on to 20,000 iu D3. This for 3 months then go to 1000 per day. Thank you for reply.

20,000IU's - could that dose be causing the headaches ? Just a thought....

Hi Marz I've been having these headaches for 2 years long before I started taking D3 it's only been 2 months. I do have two discs in my neck damaged and they said had nerve damage also and my neck was to dangerous to operate on. Also had spinal fusion in L5/L4/S1 and had nerve damage there also and have 1 disc gone in middle of back and the consultant wants to take my old operation out and go all way up to where disc in middle is damaged. But since been on Levo I have had no change in my health and it's been 2 years or so now.

Have you ever had copies of all your bloodtests and posted the results here with ranges.... ? Could be you are not converting your T4 into the Active T3....

It is better to think of your body having auto-immune issues rather than a thyroid one. This is well explained in the book by Izabella Wentz - Hashimotos - The Root Cause. She also has a website and you can sign up for a Newsletter which is very informative. I have Hashimotos and Crohns so am dealing with the gut healing and ensuring all vitamins and minerals are optimal. It is a journey - but one worth travelling.... :-)

The medical profession rarely know how to advise you on auto-immune issues as it is so complicated and personal. Am afraid it is about learning for yourself. I was diagnosed with Crohns over 40 years ago and the Hashimotos in 2005 - and I am still learning.... !!
