Pill administration or why you MUST wash your pills down with plenty of water...
I worked with someone whose husband worked for a big pharma company. One day I watched her taking some meds and she took them with what must have been a litre of water - a huge amount. When I commented she said that her other half wouldn't have dreamt of taking pills without that amount of water. I took that as a warning and have done the same ever since. When I think I used to swallow things like aspirin without anything to drink at all.
There was an interview with a doctor on a R4 health programme a few years ago, whilst a med student he swallowed a course of antibiotics dry as he ran out of the door. Caused ulcers in his gullet which were incredibly painful and took more than a month to heal, but not as bad as the humiliation he felt for his self inflicted injury.
Interesting. Recently, with my dry throat problem, I've regularly got pills stuck in my throat when trying to take them. I possibly do skimp on water when I'm taking them. I'll be extra careful not to skimp on water after reading that. Thanks, Clutter!
I've always suffered from Globus sensation which feels like a large piece of food is stuck in my throat so I do slosh pills down with quite a lot of water. The smaller the pill, the more likely it is to feel 'stuck'.
Exception is when given pills in hospital pre-op! I shall insist on more water or refuse meds if in the same situation again.
