Hi just diagnosed hyperthyroid tsh 0.01 but I w... - Thyroid UK
Hi just diagnosed hyperthyroid tsh 0.01 but I went to gp because gaining weight and severe fluid retention have gone up 8 ring sizes how can
Hi, it might be worth getting your potassium checked as i think this can contribute towards fluid retention when hyperthyroid. I was the opposite from you and drastically lost weight but did get fluid retention in my calfs and ankles which was so bizarre as the rest of me is so skinny. Since being diagnosed I've started juicing again and the fluid retention has gone. The one that does the trick for me is 1cucumber, 1pineapple and
4-6 apples. Hope this helps, take care x
Hi thanks for reply joy333 will try the juicing recioe I look like a beached whale and people keep saying you must be underactive no no no definitely overactive I just dont fit the mould
I know, this thyroid business, it's such a horrible thing to have, i wouldnt wish it on anyone. Have you started carbimazole yet? Do you have any other symptoms? X
Hi yes I am having bad sweats , feeling red hot( good news cut my fuel bills by a third) , not being able to sleep, racing heart amd anxiety all of which I thought was the menopause! I started carbimozole last wed so not even a week yet.Did you get any improvement with the meds and if so how lomg did it take?
It does get better but it takes time. The best thing you can do for now is be extra good to yourself, lots and lots of rest if you can and try to avoid stress. Drink lots of water too if you can.
I was diagnosed with Graves this year and had the full on body shakes alongside all the symptoms you have. I still take a beta blocker-propranalol 80mg which really helps with the syptoms. Have you been given a betablocker to help with symptoms? The carbimazole was a life saver, my only issue is getting the dosage right and am back up to taking 40mg. It will take a while to kick in and once it does you'll start to feel so much better.
Some advice I would give you as members here have given me, is to start getting print outs of all your blood results and this way you can keep a close eye on your levels alongside how you are actually feeling. Also you should be getting blood tests every 4-6 weeks and the carbimazole will be adjusted accordingly. Having regular blood tests can prevent you from being overmedicated and going hypo which some members here have experienced.
Its a steep learning curve but people here will always help and theres no such thing as a daft question. Hang in there, it does get better x
Hi yes been given propranolol 80 mg.I have never been on a forum before and I cant believe how helpful and supportive you all are.thankyou I will update after been endo x
you need more tests to see what is going on - have you had FT4 and antibody tests at least?
If it's Graves it's autoimmune and can go up and down as your body attacks your thyroid - which is similar with hashimotos, autoimmune too but Hypo.
I'm presuming they're thinking Graves as it's Hyper - this even confused Broda Barnes years ago - he went by temperature cold = hypo, hot = hyper - it's an indicator but sadly not simple .
You need FT4 and FT3 (actual hormones) and antibodies tested too.
Also minerals and vitamins tested like irons, ferritin, folate B12 and Vit D for starters.
(I don't pretend to know anything about Graves - I just had hyper symptoms due to a dodgy nodule - and hope knowledgeable folk will respond to help) J x
Hi spare ribs thankyou for replying. My gp told me my tsh is 0.01 and my t4 and t3 are high.my vit d is low thats all I can remember was in shock as I expected to be underactive because of the eeight gain.Hopefully when my appt comes through for endo clinic I will have tests to find out the cause.x
everyone's different, but must be more than annoying that you gain weight being Hyper 'tho
Good that you have an endo appointment and hope he/she sorts it for you
meanwhile get that Vit D up (wonder what else is low?) - I take drops & feel so much better (and docs don't recognise the importance of 'mere' vitamins) take care sweety J x
Thankyoux
Hi
I put on loads of weight and was shocked to discover I was hyper, the weight does eventually come off you as your medication is reduced and you go back to normal, whatever that is.
Always get print outs of your bloods I hope you have got an Endo that will listen to you and support you on your road back to good health.
Good luck
Hi elayneg thankyou for your reply its good to know I not the only one gaining weight whilsy hyper.I dont know yet what my endo is like my gp didnt give me a name so I cant look him/her up.Guess I am going to have to get used to asking more questions!
My sister had Graves' and slight thyroid eye disease. She's a non-smoker but was told not to allow anyone to smoke in the same room as it could be extremely detrimental for her eyes.
what is your T4 level? You can be hypothyroid with a low TSH if it is secondary hypothyroidism. But I assume they will have checked that this is not the case but you never know with these doctors.
Hi natalie thankyou for your response.I cant remember my t4 level but gp said both t4 and t3 are high? Will have to make sure I take note in future just so much to take in!
