Hi there, new to this site, and have a question... - Thyroid UK
Hi there, new to this site, and have a question how do I see to my vitamin levels, as I am on warfarin for bloodclotting for life aswell
The only correct and safe way to deal with vitamin levels is to get them tested first. If you supplement without first getting tested you are likely to cause confusing to both yourself and your GP should he/she test any of your vitamins in the future. It could also be dangerous to supplement without knowing if you are low in something. For exampe, supplementing VitD when you dont need it could cause your body to make excess calcium which it then deposits in the kidney (causing kidney stones) or worse still, in the heart. Also taking iron when it is not needed can also be quite dangerous so my advice would be to get your VitD, B12, iron, ferritin and folates tested and then post the results on here for people to comment and advise.
Dont let your GP tell you that things are "in range" as the NHS range is not an optimal range for thyroid sufferers - although you dont say in your questions if you are acutally suffering from thryoid illness.

Hi
Yep im hypo
Been diagnosed with Fybromyalgia
Lieden v
And hypo with the thyroid.
Gp medicating me all over the place
Gabbapentin
Tramadol
Levo
Warfarin
Dusulpin
Atorvastatin
Omeprosol
My chest feels like its going to burst
Thank you for your info
Just dont know where to start
Im also carrying the antibody for celiac
Has the biopsy on duodenum years ago and they said it was clear
For months they been saying it was fybro playing up then routine bloods came back with my levo needing upping as whatever levels were high
Feel lile im chasong my tail with the docs
Then you need to take control yourself by, first stop eating gluten (unless you are going for testing) and second start asking for the appropriate vitamin tests to be done. Are you keeping the timings of ALL your other meds well away from the time you take your levo? (at least 4 hours) and two hours away from any food or drink (except water).
Have you got any recent blood results that you can post? if not can you get a print out of them and then post on here for people to comments and advise. You are allowed, by law, to have a copy of your blood results so don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Hi
I was not told to take the levo and leave a gap before other meds food or drink
Will definatly do that from now on
Will try to get the tests to post
Thanks for the info x
That's appalling - do you mean to tell me that your GP did not advise you on how to take any of your meds????
No wonder you are still feeling so ill and your levo is being increased. You may find that once you are taking it correctly you may have to decrease.
Are you stuck with the GP you have or could you see someone else who may have a bit more of a clue as to treating and advise a thyroid patient.

that's correct, they just prescribe, no details at all on when and how to take.
learnt more here in a day than in years off docs.
They just don't seem to look at the notes, had a blood test went to doc , he just said we are going to double the dose of Levo as your thyroid is playing up, gave me a script for the new tabs and sent me on my merry way.
The other doctor blamed the fibromyalgia, every time I went to see him, I told him sometimes I am nearly comatose ,just cannot move , even open my eyes, my partner has thought on a few occasions that I have had a stroke , told him of the insomnia , joint pains , lack of appetite, hairs gone on my legs, hair falling out, the whole load of symptoms I have been suffering.
Reply : Its all down to the fibromyalgia, cant give you anymore tabs, top up with paracetamol.
only got the bloodtest done as I was due my yearly prevention test.
Or this would have carried on, as I was told it was fybro not thyroid.
To be honest I feel a wreck.
Have you had ANY of your vitamins tested - B12, VitD, iron, ferritin & folates?
If these are not at optimal levels for thyroid patients this is another reason your thyroid meds may not work.
Moggie x
In a short word . no.
I will try to get the test results, and post them for you.
Not heard any mention about vitamins ect.
Thyroid, cholesterol and liver, both the latter ok.
Go for INR test tomorrow although in the past few months that's been all over the place.
Sorry I don't know what a INR test is but I would definitely be asking for the above vitamins to be tested sooner rather than later.
Good luck with it.

Hi Your INR will alter if not on thyroid drugs and need them, up or down. When the correct dose, it should be more stable. Antibiotics essential and any new drug to test INR after 1 week.If you take co-enzyme Q10, which is a brilliant supplement, take great care on the INR as will effect it to start with. In fact everything does. Have the same amount of K in food, eg sprouts, every week and the same with alcohol, , actually that sounds as if I mean every day, I mean weekly.Everything effects the INR.
If on Amioderone, it lowers the thyroid, a lot. If on Beta Blockers have thyroid tests, before taking the morning dose
Vit D ( hormonal) is especially important, test, if low then a corrected calcium test, whuch is an electrolyte then treatment on a script, ideally Endo..You do not say why you are on Warfarin, clots cover a lot.If possiblility it is A. F,or other sounds like it, or other electrical disturbance. Essential the, to watch the U`s and E`s , kidney function, for Potassium, ideal 4, sodium , ideal bottom of range.. Also check the magnesium, an important electrolyte. Do not take this unless under medical supervision.Tiny range.
The minerals are more important than vits, a tablet, the best containing all these is a good idea. It still means vit D and B12 + foliates need testing. Also iron/ferritin.
Best wishes,
Jackie
Hi
I am on warfarin because I have leiden v activated protein c risistance
I have had a clot in calf, one in groin and one in lung that collapsed the centre ssection of my right lung
Now placed on warfarin for life
Bill
Hi Bill, I see, at a guess, you may also have sticky blood, I do.It often does not show up on the known tests, I had a chat with my good Haematologist about it.I would still do the tests I have suggested. Some times with things "a bit different", one discovers, often oneself, other "funny" things too.At least you had a good diagnosis.
I am wondering if you had your PTH checked too? This is checked initially by a blood test must be exactly this, Corrected calcium, and Parathyroid ( PTH) and vit D, must be tested together and AM. If ca and PTH much over range and D high for you. Then, a nuclear scan and CT for PTH + ultra sound for thyroid.A PTH tumour can take 20 years to develop and it can cause lots of diverse problems.
Best wishes,
Jackie
