Any views on doing a juice fast just to 'reboot' metabolism and weight loss ... or is this a crazy thing to do while hypothyroid. Just so miserable about the weight gain, I feel I need to do something drastic (while I wait for lowering of Levo dose to work before I can start the next battle with GP over other tests etc).

Juice Fast /Hypothyroid
Oh dear ! I have read that reducing your intake drastically slows down metabolism even more - as your body thinks you are hibernating - so conserves energy. Think caveman I too struggle with weight issues. I have also read that sometimes when you are allergic to certain foods - it can prevent you losing weight. Gluten sensitivity ??
Yes I had thought that too ... I'm also hoping it will wean me off the gluten ... as I know I should be avoiding it completely from reading this site. So that is part of my thinking too ...
Why are you lowering your Levo dose if you are hypo? Are you sure your GP is not looking just at TSH, which we all know from info here, is a hopeless blood test to decide whether a person is on the right dose. If you post results here with reference ranges, people can comment. I expect you need more, not less. Hope you get some help on that. x
I have done a juice 21 day reset that I found on youngandraw.com . it was good for me , not for weight loss although i did loose 6lbs, it boosted my energy and got me off coffee and too many carbs . I have retained some of the good habits 6 months on. It was not supposed to be a weight loss diet, but I would reccomend it.
ps. I am also hypo and take Armour.

Roslin... interesting reading that made my heart sink... perhaps dieting most of my adult life has given my my Hypo/conversion T4-T3 (which I think is my issue right now) problems ...
'Croxson et al. in Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism found that individuals with a history of intense dieting had dramatic reductions in T4 to T3 conversion with an intracellular deficiency of T3. The inadequacy and inaccuracy of standard TSH and T4 testing was demonstrated, as such testing failed to detect the dramatic reduction in tissue levels of T3 in all of the patients (50).'
I did a well known Very Low Calorie Diet a couple of years ago and lost 3-4 stone which I then put on again plus more. In desperation I tried it again and didn't loose anything. This was a 300cal a day diet! I think it has taken years to recover to the state I am now which is still very poorT4-T3 conversion. It sounds like the best way is to do intermittent fasting or 2-5 diet which interferes less, may still have an effect on conversion, I don't know.

Hi Danzee...Some considerable years back my husband and I decided to do a weekend fasting detox eating nothing but fruit and drinking water.I can only relate what happened to us........We started Saturday morning after delivering our son to the airport..........by the evening we both had violent headaches and spent Sunday feeling very ill.........we probably had caffeine withdrawal but we both declared ....never again.
I would say ...just be careful......maybe others here are giving you good advice to help you .I hope all goes well..... PS....At that time I wasn't on Levo.
Yes I did it for 5 days in the summer. The first 2 days were awful - caffeine withdrawal as you say.
I also have weight to lose - weight I gained while undiagnosed/untreated. My personal thoughts on any sort of weight loss diet/ regime are that these are less important than getting my thyroid levels optimal and stable. I feel the body has gone through enough stress already, and unless my thyroid levels are good, anything else could add yet more stress. Good luck.
Thanks LizSahara. Good luck with getting optimal ... that sadly is not a quick fix in my experience ... hence the weight ... and the waiting ...
I understand your urge to do something drastic but I'm not convinced this is the way forward. I think the article posted by Roslin sums up what I have come to believe.
I was a fat child and at the age of fourteen I was put on a diet. Since then, I have dieted for most of my adult life (apart from when I was having my children of course), and I have always wondered if this has contributed to my problems. I have always thought that my metabolism was slow and I gained weight following every 'diet'.
Try to remember that those of us with thyroid issues need to have good nutrition. I have a long way to go, being low in iron at present, but I for one have vowed never to 'diet' again. As LizaSaraha says our bodies are under enough stress already without adding to it.
I am 50 and I've decided that my health is more important than my weight and I am concentrating on eating as healthy a diet as I can. It was very liberating actually to decide I'm not going to diet the rest of my life away. Strangely enough, I have lost around 8 lbs in the last 12 months!
