I have been taking PTU for about 9 months and had fairly low White blood counts since before I was diagnosed. Thanks
Has anyone with an over active thyroid also bee... - Thyroid UK
Has anyone with an over active thyroid also been referred to a haematologist due to having a low white blood count? Thanks
Hi Lost_ 30. I know you asked about over active thyroid. I have an underactive thyroid and have been seeing a haematologist about a low white blood cell count (amongst other things...including anaemia) for several months now. I too had had low white blood cell count for several years before I was diagnosed. I have been told I have neutropenia, not severe, but enough to mean that my immune system is compromised. It is difficult to say what symptom is caused by what (for me, was it the anaemia, low thyroid or neutropenia that was making me feel ill) Can I ask if you have any symptoms and what is the proposed course of action for your treatment.
Thanks, like you I am confused by what symptoms are caused by my thyroid, are side effects of PTU or something else. I feel like I have very low energy levels and really struggle in the mornings. I've also been more prone to viruses and infections particularly sinus infections recently. I've also struggled with bloating and constipation. I haven't seen the haemotoligist yet I have an appointment with them in early December. Thanks again
Hi
I self diagnosed chronic neutropaenia, just like i correctly self diagnosed every other disease i have. For years nhs said my low white cellcount was normal - well it is not and it puts me at risk of all sorts of other things. After i had it confirmed privately, the nhs has woken up to the fact i have it, but they do nothing about it - just as they do nothing about anything else.
When you have chronic neutropaenia it is important you look after yourself very well as you are at high risk of infection. When you get run down, you must take time out. You will usually be put on antibiotics for any sort of procedure.
My private GP (wish i could afford him all the time so i could ditch the nhs) said it was typical for some one who has multiple auto immune diseases as i do - your immune system is totally compromised.
I self manage all my diseases and conditions due to years of NHS failure. I have found that my neutrophil count is climbing very very slowly now i have cut out gluten (to manage the coeliac the nhs says i dont have) and now i am dosing sufficiently for my pernicious anaemia (which the nhs said i didnt have) and using ndt instead of levo (which i obtain myself since nhs refuses to prescribe) and then in sep/aug i had all my mercury fillings removed and had a root canal extracted. Within a month of mercury and root canal extraction, my neutrophils were up for the first time in about 8 years
In short, you need to remove any factors that will aggravate your immune system, eg mercury and the hidden bacteria that resides in asymptomatic root canals (google it and you will be astounded at the health risks)
