Hi Can I give you a different picture. I am in end stage heart failure with lots of complications. too ill to have my vital 2 heart valves operated on. So, I would not suggest you leave it as you might then be plagued by my position. As I cannot have it done, I have huge amounts of Ascites ( fluid on the tum) it is not like fat, makes me very ill, deaths door every time and of course, for that and other reasons emergency admissions to hospital ever few months.

On the other side my niece with similar problems did have a valve replacement, is hypo thyroid, diabetic etc. In ITU for a few days,, hospital a further week and brilliant afterwards. Hers could not be done by micro surgery, it depends on which valve, obviously if that possible much easier.

Try not to worry, hundreds done for many years. However, do make sure it is a good teaching hospital.

Very best wishes.

Thanks Jackie. So sorry to hear your problems. the patient information sheets issue heart warnings so is the thyroxine killing us? it is an excellent teaching hospital, hence detection when really no symptoms really. Sitting here feeling a complete fraud. School friend is a retired cardiac theatre nurse so following her instructions to the letter. Open heart is the only one for aoura stenosis. Did your niece have carbon or tissue replacement?

meki,

The warnings are very much to do with what can happen if you have too much thyroid hormone. The right amount (so far as can be judged) is far more likely to improve the ability of the heart to function.

For myself, I feel so very much better taking what seems a sensible dose of levothyroxine every day. No, I cannot be certain about the inner workings of my heart. And I was never very low in thyroid hormone in the first place.

Excess thyroid hormone can, most certainly, affect the heart causing it to beat too fast (among other things).

Indeed, there have been quite a few papers recently suggesting use of T3 (Liothyronine) in the treatment of heart disease - pretty much regardless of the patient's thyroid hormone levels - because it has important effects on heart and blood vessels. (No - don't assume you need T3 from this brief sentence!)
