Fionn, Isn't that a version of T3? (Liothyronine) a Thyroid hormone. Yes, it has been reported that it does help depression symptoms (or do you actually have an underactive Thyroid? Hypothyroid) Please post your blood tests results if you can, if not please get them (you have a right to see your own tests). and more knowledgeable folks will chip in to help you.

I have replied although unmedicated myself, so without any experience (and no medical qualifications either) as I think this is unusual as us thyroid patients are often prescribed anti-depressants to start - not the other way around! But this is good news for you.

How are you feeling? Have you had irons, folate, B12, Vitamin D tested too? depression symptoms have other causes too.. Jane :D

Jane, you are very good to have replied to my query. My Psychitrist felt I needed more medication due to my low mood so he started me on the T Tre. Thybon 20 Henning is on the box.

Incidentally this medication is not allowed on the Government scheme whereby patients get free medication. Anyway if it works it's worth paying for. 14 Euro for 30 here in Ireland. I will follow up on the tests you suggested B12 etc. As regards my thyroid, my Dr said he is using the T Tre as an antidepressant and while my thyroid results show slightly low he is not concerned. He has many patients on the T Tre and he finds it very helpful.

I will let you know how I get on. I am very encouraged by your reply.

Thank you Jane so much for your help.

From Ireland, I assume you are in the UK.

Good night.

HI Fionn, it's been a while since you posted this but did the Thybon Henning help you? I am starting it for depression in a couple of days too.

Depression and a thyroid gland problems can go hand-in-hand sometimes and it is good your psychiatrist has prescribed T3.

T3 is the active thyroid hormone which every cell in our body needs (the brain having the most) and I have read several times that it is sometimes better to prescribe T3 (which our body produces naturally) instead of the usual anti-d's.

Levothyroxine, which is the usual prescription for hypothyroidism, is also known as T4. It should convert to enough T3 but it doesn't always convert to enough.

Let's know how you get on and for your information here is a link re T3.

The only licensed T3 tablet in the UK is Mercury Pharma's. The British National Formulary says this about price:

Liothyronine sodium (Mercury) Prescription only medicine

Tablets, scored, liothyronine sodium 20 micrograms, net price 28-tab pack = £52.46

That is the cost to the NHS. If you were to have to buy it yourself, it would be more than that, though by how much will depend on the pharmacy. But if you get it prescribed on an NHS prescription you would expect it to qualify you for free prescriptions.

A few people get special imports of, for example Cytomel from the USA or Paddock from the USA. The cost to the NHS of those could be several hundred pounds.

During the recent shortage of the Mercury Pharma product, some people even got the same as you - Thybon from Germany.

How many tablets do you get for your 14 euros?

Rod, thanks for the reply. I get 30 tablets for 14 Euro. For some reason our equivalent to the NHS,

The HSE in Ireland will not supply this tablet for free. Could I take another drug ? Eltroxin for instance is allowed for free. I am only living on a pension so any saving is a help. Thank you.

Eltroxin/Levothyroxine (T4) and Liothyronine (T3) cannot readily substitute each other. Although, in our bodies, about a third of the T4 gets converted into T3, it is not really as simple as that.

It is possible that you are hypothyroid and would do OK on levothyroxine (T4) - but you really, really need to discuss that sort of thing with your doctors.
