Memory function does anyone with hypothyroid fi... - Thyroid UK
Memory function does anyone with hypothyroid find it affects their memory function? Seem to be struggling to retain or remember things
Yes, defo a bad effect on memory function. It was that which drove me to the Dr (about 20yrs ago now) because my work was suffering, to the extent that my job was in jeopardy. Has anything else happened in the last year which may be adding stress? Thinking maybe family crisis, house move, job change, menopause ...
Best wishes,
Puss
Yes several things that have been stressful. When first diagnosed I struggled with words amongst different symptoms. This is slightly different and as my thyroid has been yoyoing this year I'm not sure what is what now. So thought I'd ask others. GP wants me to wait a few more weeks until repeat blood test . Thanks
I would ask for a T3 blood test too as T3 is the active hormone and of all the cells in our body, the brain has the most cells. Maybe your T4 is not converting enough into T3.
Check you B12 levels too - maybe you have. Results need to be around the 800 mark. Thyroid sufferers often have low levels due to slow absorption or other issues. b12d.org
That's interesting as I was diagnosed 17 years ago and have just started having memory problems over the last year. I'm 46 and keep worrying it's the start of dementia.
My memory is now so bad,I have to write things down all the time....praying its not dementia......could be as approaching 76..and NO..I wont ask for a dementia test....I want to blame it on my thyroid Humph......
Im hoping it's not dementia too, both for u & me! Does seem to be linked to thyroid from what others and my symptoms suggest on the underactive scale. Keep ur notebook handy!
It's the thyroid, believe me!
I'm a bit older than you and I know that worry which was the reason I asked the question. My thyroid been all over the place this year & recently noticed this symptom so I'm hoping it is the thyroid ! Thanks
My Dad appeared to have dementia, but it was 'profound'hypothyroidism. It really is a symptom and a lot of my past is very cloudy. Armour thyroid has helped me enormously with memory and concentration now. Don't worry that it is the start of dementia.x
Yes my memory is affected and simple functions like which cupboard I go to get the tea out!
That is on a 'bad day' otherwise as normal. My manual dexterity is also affected on such a day.
Very embarrassing when you come to the middle of a sentence and cannot remember the rest. I frequently do this, then sort of go off into a 'daydream'. Janet.
I had difficulty with words & spoonerisms before I was diagnosed and suppose as I have some medication this time it's slightly different. Can't seem to hold thoughts
Hi, I was diagnosed hypo 27 years ago and now have several health issues. Memory has deteriorated significantly last 3 years. So hope it s not dementia. I take b vits, B12, iron. Can't do much More to help myself. It seems memory probs go with the territory then! Alison
Hi Any hormonal problem of any sort, even heart does. However, with thyroid once correctly treated it should be fine.
Best wishes,
Jackie
I had been stable until 12 months ago & it's been yoyoing since waiting for next blood test this was a slightly new symptom to me which is why I thought I'd ask others. Thank you
I woke up in hospital had no idea how I got there or could not remember the last few days all a blur. They new straight away I had an under active thyroid. They said probably had it for a few years without knowing. Only if I drink and go to a party has my memory been effected. I still have not remembered anything about this 3 years later. A complete blank.
Wow that is scary! Luckily mine is very minor to that. I assume you're medicated now good luck
Yes the hospital put me on150mg of levothyroxine. Lost instant weight. Hair on my arms grew back. Puffy eyes went normal. Aches in legs have gone. Have not ever felt cold anymore. My local GP has just changed me to 100mg.My memory is first class again that was a strange thing maybe it had nothing to do with having an under active thyroid. The worst part about it is that the hospital sectioned me under the mental disorder act for 28 days. I have never been to prison but this was like a sentence. I was told I had illusions of granger. But that was 3 years ago accent history.
yep memory problems is one of the worrying symptoms - or brain function in general. I'm 33 and worry that it is only going to get worse. I read up a lot on what I can do to try and improve things/prevent dementia (my gran had dementia and died in her 60's). All my reading has lead me to the conclusion that avoiding inflammation is key as this is what causes dementia/heart disease. So supplementing anti inflammatory fats like fish oil/omega 3 and avoiding saturated/trans fats, getting lots of antioxidants from fruit to avoid oxidative stress, high fibre etc. Basically eat healthy and exercise.
I too have memory problems made worse 7 years ago by a stroke and can't remember a blessed thing. Have noticed over the last 2 years that when I get generics my symptoms get worse I put on around 2 stone and eat like a bird.
concentrating on something hard for me...
