Will having my dosage of thyroxine reduced by the doctor make me gain weight
Hi It depends on what your TSH, T4 and especially FT3 is, if T4 still in top third and FT3 near the top ( with a little T3 if needed) then , you should not. Hyper and hypo can be the same symptoms, the blood test are important together with how you feel.

Why is your doctor reducing your dose? Are you having over-active symptoms? If not then do NOT let your doctor reduce your dose, simply say NO!!
If the reduction is based on your low TSH level, do not follow through. If the reduction is because of a very high FT3 level and you feel overmedicated, then follow the advice.
Absolutely agree with previous answers. The only reason for a change in thyroxine is if your blood AND your symptoms show that you are over-medicated.
Have you suddenly lost some weight without trying? Also If you can take your pulse and temperature in the morning before you get out of bed for a few days, you can get a fair idea. It is not foolproof- infections will raise the temp obviously - but if your temperature is higher than usual and your pulse is regularly over 100 (not just occasionally) particularly first thing in the morning- then you could be a bit hyper and a small reduction of around 25mcg could be in order. In which case, so long as you stick to your normal level of activity, etc. there should be no reason to gain weight.
If you feel fine and the doctor want to reduce on the basis of the TSH - then say no. Reducing your thyroxine to below your optimal level would in that case lead to weight gain.
Take care Jacqui.
