can anyone help me out on a supplement that helps lower cortisol, im already on nutri adrenals and vit c, thanks x
high cortisol question?: can anyone help me out... - Thyroid UK
high cortisol question?
Nutri Adrenal is likely to increase cortisol. So I think it would be wise to stop taking it if you know that your cortisol is too high.
There's not much point taking one product to raise cortisol and another to reduce it at the same time.
Apparently adaptogens do this job. Check it out on line....
When was this test done, Nichola, when was it high? Because it's supposed to be different levels at different times of the day.
Hugs, Grey
post awakening 23.7 (12-22)
sample 2 8.1 (5.0-9.0)
sample 3 6.6 (3.0-7.0)
sample 4 prior to sleep 3.0 (1.0-3.0)
total daily cortisol 41.4 (21-41)
Well, it's not that high. But the thing about cortisol is that it tends to go high before it goes low. Things could have changed between 1st April and now. So why do you suddenly ask the question? Have you only just got the results or has something happened, a new symptom or something? x
because ive been told high cortisol can cause anxiety and my anxiety has gotten worse over the last few weeks the only different thing I am taking is nutri adrenal don't know if its true what has been said that the nutri adrenal could produce more cortisol x
I don't really know what Nutri Adrenal is supposed to do, and I've never taken it. I'm not a great fan of 'nurishing' because it often means 'stimulating'. And what the adrenals need is rest. They get rest when you take something like Hydrocortisol which takes over the work of the adrenals but just for the morning. One doesn't take it all day. But that doesn't seem to be very popular in the UK. I just don't know what to say about Nutri Adrenal, but you could just stop taking it and see how you feel.
But I repeat that cortisol goes high before it goes low when the adrenals are fatigued. So I really do think - as Dr P obviously did - that your adrenals are fatigued. Am I right in thinking that you're not on any thyroid hormone replacement yet? My memory is terrible. As I see it, that's what you really need as you are so hypo.
Oh, and tell your doctor that just because you have more symptoms than she cares for, it is not an excuse to do nothing! Such stupidity and negligence!!! Makes me so cross. I wish I could do somthing about it, but I can't, of course.
I do hope you get some results soon, Grey x
Hi Nichola,
The Nutri adrenal is supposed to "nourish" your adrenals if you like, to make them produce more cortisol. Do you have a lot of stress in your life making you feel anxious? I know you're worried about your health, and that produces a lot of anxiety. Why don't you try taking them every other day then every 2 days, ie weaning yourself off them slowly and see if it makes a difference?XX
helcaster I really only get anxious when I have bad symptoms i.e dizziness the symptoms I suffer with gives me major anxiety and worry, when the dizziness, foggy brain and loads more other hypo symptoms kick in that when im anxious sometimes its easier that other times but the anxiety kicks in cause I am worried while having the bouts of vertigo etc x
Hi Nichola,
You are so obviously Hypo. I had vertigo and i know how frightening it can be. Doctors just don't join the dots anymore and it's so easy to slip through the net like you have done. Did you print off the symptoms list off the main thyroid uk site? I am possitive there will be dizziness on there as well as the more obvious brain fog etc etc. I know it takes a lot of confidence to take this to your GP, and we can be so short on confidence when we feel grotty. If you don't get on with the GP you've seen, could you see another one at your pactice?
With my dizziness and vertigo I got sent to an ENT and had balance tests and physio, such a waste of money. That's one thing levothyroxine did improve. I was falling over in the street and down the stairs before!
Could you take someone with you for support? XX
you understand the anxiety because of this then? can you please give me a link for the symptoms, I actually wrote and printed off all my symptoms to the gp myself and she said oh your suffering with loads, there no one illness that can possibly link to all this I said oh yes there is!
I was also sent to ent they said they could clearly see a balance problem, they done the eplic manoever on me too not sure how to spell that, they sent me away with vesticublar exercise sheets to do and that was it, still 9 years down the line suffering, I have been diagnosed with anxiety for 18 years never once got the balance and vertigo until I feel pregnant 9 years ago with my 3rd child, I gained loads of weight while pregnant with her and suffered real bad after the pregnancy with high blood pressure and was unable to shift the weight with her, I later on did though!
I also have the fluid feeling in my ears and suffer with eye floaters to that the gp says are normal and so did the opticians, its very common and sent me packing, I know its not anxiety causing the symptoms im simply anxious cause of the symptoms x
Hi Nichola,
I really do understand the anxiety because I suffered from it all my life. I've been sent to so many different consultants and no one worked it out in 14 years. I'm not getting better and this causes me great anxiety made a lot worse by not sleeping. What I did notice when I had vertigo is that for me anxiety made it much worse and I was more likely to fall outdoors.
If you go on ThyroidUK.Org on the home page you can click on "For a more comprehensive list of symptoms click here" it's under the picture of a very tired looking woman. Take a look, print it off, tick the boxes and shove it up that stupid doctor's nose. This is what I had to do to get diagnosed.
I had the fluid feeling too, like when you put your head under the bath water, it's really distressing. After 5 years of going to an ENT and losing hearing, I had grommets put in, it made no difference, I just got tinnitus in that ear too!
I know how poorly you're feeling Nichola, we all do. You have to be brave and go back to your GP. XX
ive got tinnitus also and have been diagnosed with tmj, did you have to do the caloric testing and the testing on your eyes? I had to march on the spot with eyes open and then close them I couldn't march on the spot I was falling everywhere, again no diagnosis, no diagnosis with the heart no diagnosis with anything, yet so many symptoms, I told my gp instead of telling me what it isn't trying telling me what it is, she made me laugh when she said there isn't 1 illness that causes so many symptoms, she knew just what I ment when I told her she was wrong.
I will do that list and print it off and hand it to her cause then it would be great to see her gobsmacked face, thanks x
Sorry to jnump in here Nichola. But Helcaster, have you ever tried seeing a Cranial Osteopath? If you can find a highy recommended one in your area, think you are near Newcastle ? it is amazing what they can achieve with symptoms such as you are describing and much more besides.... It is a very subtle therapy but SO effective.....GP or Endo route is hopeless in my humble opinion.
best

Hi, Excuse delay. I used to see an Osteopath a few years back. But since having mri,s and Xrays my consultant told me not to go. I have a lot of problems with 5 really damaged cervical vertibrae.
Thanks for the suggestion though , I know this procedure can be very helpful.
I've had every test going and still no diagnosis until i insisted on a thyroid blood test. The other thing if you haven't had this already is a cholesterol blood test. If you have high level this can indicate hypothyroidism.
I'd love to be a fly on the wall when you hand her the list! Xx
that will be my leaving gift to her haha x
That's good you've had a laugh! Did you see all your symptoms on.the list? It's a relief to know we're not going bonkers, lol!
oh yes, and im sure she will think that I copied that list but in different order when I take it to her, I swear she thinks that im desperate to have this illness and im making it up x
Nichola
Phosphatdyl Serine is supposed to lower cortisol.
I would not take it tho without Dr P knowing.
Your body symptoms sound precariuosly balanced.
Foget about GP helping you with Adrenals. I have a very open/awake GP. I asked her the question outright. "Does NHS help people with adrenal issues" her response "NO, and we are failing a lot of very sick people because of it"
I have high nightime cortisol. Telatively normal daytime.
But I supplement for strengthening my adtrenals. I don't take NAX as I prefer to take indv supplements.
The most important ones to me are B5 - I take 1000mg, split over am/pm. Vit C, 4500mg daily.
I also take an adrenal glandular. Also a B50 vitamin.
good luck
