Thyroid cancer and covid

Hi I know that people with thyroid cancer are not at high risk/vulnerable to covid, but I just feel so scared about catching the virus and how it might affect me. I can't stop worrying about it. Do other people feel like this?

Hi Lucy. I’m more worried about catching it snd giving it to my father who lives with us. I’m 46 so yes worried I’ll be unwell but hope I come through ok. It’s a very worrying time though and yes I’m anxious so understandable you are too. Keep abiding by the rules. Strict hand hygiene and mask use. Wash hands after putting on and taking off mask. Wash at 60 degrees or higher if reusable one. All the best. Xx

I think lots of people are worried about catching COVID and about passing it on to others. All you can do is practise safe hygiene and stay away from public places. Ensure vitamin D level is good and eat a good diet, rest and be sensible. I've no medical knowledge but from what I understand, we're no more at risk than others of our age if 6 months beyond treatment.

Is the 6 months from surgery or RAI? Or 6 months from having the all clear? Wish I could stay away from public places I work in one

I don't know for sure, I imagine from the end of treatment. Some people don't really get an all clear and it's lifetime monitoring for them, so unlikely to be after getting the all clear. I would check with your GP or consultant if you want to be clear about your risks.

I think the risk is higher for people with low immunity. I rememember that 6 months after RAI my immunity level was so low that I would catch any cold, I even had a throat infection that only started with a cough that I has to take antibiotics to get rid of. It’s about how your imune system will respond to covod. But I do believe that if we’re careful and we wear a mask and wash our hands, it can be avoided.

I am concerned about getting the virus. I do not know how serious the virus would be (more like a cold or much worse). I have to use desiccated thyroid hormone replacement (1/2 dose 2x per day). It is a very unique dose comprised of a few different strengths to get me the amount I need daily.

If I became sick with the virus I do not know what meds would be given me, how they would interfere with my THR. We know steroids and some antibiotics interfere and, for me, cause other reactions. I had a very bad reaction to Levaquin. Later learned that there is a class action suit b/c it caused paralysis and coms in patients. If I ended up hospitalized, they would not be able to give me my THR. I already had that experience a few years ago when I had mastoiditis/vertigo.

I understand your concern. I am nearly one year out from a nasty divorce and my x is living (trying to bother me) true to form. I try to live as best I can, finding peace, laughter, happiness and helping others.
