hi cazza

i had the same thing and i was always dreading 1 or 2 hours in a car.

let your driving instructor know about the IBS, i did with mine and we created several routes with pubs / shops / supermarkets etc so there was no more than a few minutes between each possible toilet stop. I also found that not eating a few hours before each lesson stopped me needing to go.

i hope this helps you. and good luck with your driving :)

Hi, im currently learning to drive, i made sure my instructor knew about my ibs and i find it ok. i actually find that the driving distracts me and i dont even think about my stomach. I only have 1hr lessons that are around 2minutes away from where I live on the industrial estates. There are always ways around things.

Good luck

Hi Cazza

I just passed my test about one month ago. I really enjoy driving and and have found that my IBS really hasn't caused a problem with this. I agree with HannahQ that it seems to cause a distraction but I thin that because I am happy and relaxed it helps too. However when I was a nervous wreck before my test and my stomach felt like it was shredding itself so I took some buscopan and loperamide about half an hour before it and I also used rescue remedy and I was fine.

Good Luck!

yer i definatly think that ibs can be eased with distractions, when im at work, which i love my stomach doesnt bother me until i stop and think. The same with the driving and looking after my baby cousins. i think when its my final i'll be taking imodium just to be on the safe side.

Hi. When i learnt to drive i told my instructor and he always made provision for a toilet stop if we needed one, at the end of the day you are paying them so they owe it to you to make you feel comfortable! I find car journeys impossible, and if we go on a long journey (which i avoid at all costs) i always drive as i find it to be a distraction and helps get me through the journey. Unfortunately, i struggle with car journeys so am still looking for the answer as to how to cope with the anxety and stress they cause, however being the driver and having the control definately helps.
