My daughter has been tentatively diagnosed with IBS by her GP.

She has many of the symptoms but also has blood in her stools.

Does anyone know if this is common, I'm worried it could point to mis diagnosis by the GP.

IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion so she should not have been given a diagnosis without investigation. Other major conditions must be ruled out in order for it to be confirmed as IBS and some of these conditions can present with blood in stools. I would push for a referral to a gastroenterology specialist! I was fobbed off for most of my teenage years by doctors and didn't have a single investigation done until I was 17 and had the guts to argue with my doctor!

I would push for furhter investigation because of the blood in her stools. Ask for a referral to a gastroenterologist to eliminate any other cause for this symptom.

Yes definitely agree with above, check with a gastroenterologist. Also I had a colonoscopy and also endoscopy to rule out anything other illnesses before I was actually diagnosed with IBS. Push the doctor, don't take no for an answer!

Best of luck
